Which pancreatic cancer patients are suitable for HIFU treatment

Although HIFU treatment in pancreatic cancer treatment has the characteristics of less damage and quick recovery, it is not suitable for all patients. So, which patients are suitable for HIFU treatment of pancreatic cancer? Which patients are not suitable?

Which pancreatic cancer patients are suitable for HIFU treatment?

(1) Those who are unwilling to undergo surgical resection.

(2) Those who cannot be removed surgically.

(3) The patient’s general condition is good and the expected survival period is more than 3 months.

(4) Tumor lesions can be clearly displayed by airborne ultrasound.

(5) Those whose tumor lesions can be safely reached by therapeutic ultrasound.

Which patients are not suitable for HIFU treatment?

(1) The lesion cannot be clearly displayed by ultrasound: For example, in patients undergoing internal drainage with choledochojejunostomy, the upper abdominal cavity structure is changed, so ultrasound cannot clearly display the lesion.

(2) After pancreatic surgery, if there are metal foreign bodies or other medical devices in the surgical field, that is, in the acoustic channel of HIFU treatment, they will absorb energy during the treatment process and damage surrounding organs.

(3) Patients with obstructive jaundice: If such patients want to receive HIFU treatment, they must undergo biliary stent drainage or cholecystostomy external drainage.

(4) Imaging examinations show that the tumor encapsulates, compresses, or invades the superior mesenteric vessels, accompanied by significant dilation of the distal end of the superior mesenteric vein.

(5) CT scans show that the large blood vessels on the acoustic channel are calcified. During HIFU treatment, the calcified foci absorb more energy, which may cause blood vessels to rupture and bleed.
