Regarding the problem of urine protein, what patients need to do is go to the hospital for examination. Finding out the cause is the most important thing, and then taking a variety of methods to regulate it. First of all, avoid eating protein-rich foods. In addition, develop good living habits, such as regular exercise, and then go to the hospital for regular physical examinations. Be alert to diseases such as diabetes and high blood pressure. So how much urine protein is normal for a person?

How much urine protein is normal in a person?

The protein content in the urine of healthy people is very low (less than 150 mg per day), and the qualitative protein test is negative. When the protein content in urine increases and exceeds 150 mg/d, it can be detected by routine urine examination and is called proteinuria. If the urine protein content is ≥3.5g/24h, it is called heavy proteinuria, which is common in patients with nephrotic syndrome.

There is always a certain amount of protein in the blood that is indispensable to human life activities. Some of the protein is filtered into the urine in the glomeruli of the kidneys, but is absorbed back into the blood in the renal tubules.

Therefore, if the kidneys function normally, only a small amount of protein will appear in the urine. However, when there is an obstruction in the kidneys and ureters, a large amount of protein will leak out and become proteinuria. There is a trace amount of protein in the urine of normal people, which is qualitatively negative within the normal range and recorded as (-). When the protein content in urine is more than 0.15g/24h, it is called proteinuria, and routine urine tests may show positive results.

Normal people have trace amounts of protein in their urine. The amount of protein in children's urine is usually calculated as ≤4 mg/(m2·h). The upper limit of normal values for each age group is shown in Table 27-12. Table 27-12 Upper limit of normal value for urine protein Age Upper limit of normal value mg/24h 2~12 months 155 3~4 years 140 4~10 years 190 10~16 years 250 Generally, there is no gender difference. Prepubertal girls excrete more protein in their urine.

The amount of protein excreted in the urine of a normal person per day is generally 40-80 mg, with an upper limit of 150 mg, which is called physiological proteinuria. Due to the small amount, routine laboratory tests will be negative. If it exceeds 150 mg/day, it is considered abnormal proteinuria. When the human body excretes strenuous exercise, heavy physical labor, emotional excitement, excessive cold, overheating, or is under stress, the amount of urinary protein excretion may increase. This is called transient proteinuria and will return to normal after a few hours or days. In addition, protein may also appear in the urine of patients with kidney disease, which is called pathological proteinuria.
