Indications and contraindications for surgery in colon cancer

For colon cancer, surgery is still the main treatment method. The purpose of surgery is to remove lesions, reduce tumor burden, alleviate symptoms, obtain tissue specimens to obtain biological information of the tumor, estimate prognosis, and guide comprehensive treatment.

1. Indications for surgery

1. Tumor factors

The tumor can be locally removed (radical or palliative, even cytoreductive or symptomatic surgery); there is no metastasis to distant organs, or there is metastasis but it can be removed together, or most of it can be removed, and the tumor does not involve the body's fatal or disabling organs, tissues, blood vessels, and nerves.

2. Host factors

The patient is in good general condition, and the functions of important organs such as heart, lung, liver, and kidney can withstand the impact of surgery and anesthesia. The patient and his family members approve of surgical treatment.

2. Contraindications

1. Tumor factors

The tumor has extensive local infiltration and cannot be removed. Extensive metastasis to the abdomen, pelvic peritoneum, greater omentum and distant organs, moderate or above ascites

2. Host factors

The elderly, weak or in poor general condition; those whose heart, lung, liver, kidney and other important organs are seriously damaged and cannot tolerate the impact of surgery and anesthesia. Patients and their families refuse surgery.
