Long-term smoking can increase the risk of lung cancer

Lung cancer is related to many factors, and long-term smoking can increase the risk of lung cancer.

Harmful substances in tobacco

There are dozens of harmful substances in smoke, including carbon monoxide, nicotine and other alkaloids. These substances also have multiple biological effects. After being inhaled into the human body, they can cause varying degrees of damage to the respiratory tract, cardiovascular, gastrointestinal, nervous system, liver, kidney and other organs, especially the lungs. Long-term smoking can induce lung cancer.

The role of carcinogens and radiation in tobacco

Tobacco contains carcinogens, such as tar. Researchers conducted a large-scale comparative observation of more than 1 million people in the United States, the United Kingdom, and Canada. The results showed that the incidence of lung cancer in smokers is 10.8 times that of non-smokers; the annual mortality rate of lung cancer in non-smokers is 12.8/100,000; for those who smoke less than 10 cigarettes a day, it is 95.2/100,000; for those who smoke more than 20 cigarettes a day, it is 235.4/100,000, which is 18.4 times higher than non-smokers. In 1986, the Shanghai Tumor Research Institute of my country announced that the incidence of lung cancer in Shanghai has reached the same level as in the United States during the same period. Among the patients, only 1/3 are non-smokers. It can be seen that the main risk factor for lung cancer in Shanghai men is not air pollution, but smoking.

The recognized cause of lung cancer is smoking. Smoking is a small-scale but high-concentration air pollution. Living and working in an air-polluted environment while smoking will increase the incidence of lung cancer.
