At the beginning of the training, laryngectomy patients can communicate by writing, gesturing, or pointing to pictures, words, or letters. Other patients use a writing pad to write. Some patients carry a small dictionary or picture book with them and use these methods to communicate before surgery.

1. Esophageal sounds

This is the most convenient and economical way to pronounce. About 1/3 of people without larynx can pronounce with this method.

2. Artificial larynx

There are two types of artificial larynx: mechanical artificial larynx and electronic larynx. They use artificial pronunciation devices to replace the vibration of the vocal cords to produce sound, which is then processed through the nose, pharynx, mouth, tongue, teeth and lips to form language.

3. Surgery with severe pronunciation

A tube or an opening is created through surgery between the posterior wall of the trachea and the anterior wall of the esophagus or the pharynx, and a ventilation tube is installed. When pronouncing, air enters the esophagus or pharyngeal cavity through the tube to produce pronunciation.
