Staging and prognosis of pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma

Staging and prognosis of pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma

Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma is a common type of pancreatic cancer, which can be divided into 4 stages. The survival time of stage 1 tumor resection without residual tumor is much longer than that of ductal adenocarcinoma in other stages, so it is of great significance for patients to detect ductal adenocarcinoma as early as possible.

Staging

Stage 1 is when the cancer is confined to the pancreas or has spread outward but not beyond the duodenum, bile duct, or soft tissue surrounding the pancreas. Stage 2 is when the cancer has spread to the stomach, spleen, large intestine, and nearby large blood vessels. Stage 3 is when there is regional lymph node metastasis, and Stage 4 is when there is distant metastasis.

Postoperative residual tumor status

No residual tumor after surgery is R0, microscopic residual tumor is R1, and gross residual tumor is R2.

Prognosis

From a unilateral perspective: the average survival time of patients with no residual tumor in the first stage is 38.7 months. The average survival time of patients with no residual tumor in the second stage is only 8.5 months. From the overall effect: nearly 20% of patients with no residual tumor in the first stage can survive for 5 years at most, while patients with microscopic or gross tumor residual can only survive for 5 years.

In addition, people often fail to detect ductal adenocarcinoma early, and only 5% of patients can undergo a first-stage surgery without residual tumor. Therefore, improving the diagnostic mechanism of ductal adenocarcinoma is of great significance to the cure of ductal adenocarcinoma.
