Daily dietary principles for patients with rectal cancer

Patients with rectal cancer often have symptoms such as diarrhea, blood in the stool, nausea, vomiting, and fever, which consume a lot of energy. Therefore, it is very important to strengthen dietary nutrition. Improper diet can even aggravate the condition. The dietary principles for patients with rectal cancer include a diversified and reasonable diet, eating more fruits and vegetables rich in vitamins, and avoiding long-term high-protein and high-fat diets.

1. Easy to digest

Patients with rectal cancer often suffer from recurrent and persistent diarrhea and poor digestion and absorption functions, so they should pay attention to consuming more foods that are easy to digest and absorb.

2. Rich in water

Patients with increased bowel movements or in the late stage often have long-term fever, sweating, and damage to body fluids, so they should drink more water or soup, and the staple food can be semi-liquid food such as porridge, noodles, and wonton.

3. Eat a light diet

Most patients with colorectal cancer have blood in their stools, and patients in the late stage often have large amounts of blood in their stools, so they should eat less or no irritating and spicy food. To relieve symptoms such as loss of appetite, nausea, and even vomiting, they should eat a light diet and avoid greasy foods such as smoked and fried foods.

4. Rich in Fiber

Patients with rectal cancer should consume more dietary fiber to prevent recurrence. The reason may be that dietary fiber has strong water absorption capacity, which can increase the volume of stool, make the stool more formed, facilitate defecation, and reduce the concentration of carcinogens in the intestines, thereby reducing the risk of colorectal cancer.

5. Take medicated food

Patients with advanced rectal cancer suffer from chronic diarrhea, bloody stools, fever, and have lost a large amount of nutrients and water. They become emaciated, lose weight, and have a deficiency of both qi and blood. They should take nutritious tonic medicinal foods.
