The first reason for hiccups is functional indigestion. Hiccups are commonly known as "belching" and have many causes. Excessive accumulation of gas and fluid in the gastrointestinal tract can cause hiccups through the peristalsis of the gastrointestinal tract. Associate Professor Cheng Bin said that hiccups after meals are generally caused by gas accumulation in the gastrointestinal tract. Such patients often feel that there is gas in their stomach and believe that burping can expel the gas and make their body feel more comfortable. But in fact, before each hiccup, the patient will subconsciously swallow a breath, and the swallowed air is more than the gas hiccuped, which can only result in more and more gas in the gastrointestinal tract. If this situation continues, you may develop liver syndrome and spleen syndrome. At this time, patients often feel pain in the ribs on both sides.

This is because there is too much gas in the stomach, which enters the liver and spleen areas. This is where the intestines bend, and gas easily accumulates, causing pain. The second reason for hiccups is chronic diseases. Chronic gastritis, reflux esophagitis and other diseases can also cause frequent hiccups.

Some patients have low stomach acid, which leads to excessive food residue and causes hiccups. Chronic gastritis caused by Helicobacter pylori infection can also cause hiccups. These patients also need to minimize the number of hiccups. Because when they burp, some stomach acid and bile will enter the esophagus, thereby irritating the esophageal mucosa. In the long run, it may lead to esophageal cancer. In addition, obesity causes excessive pressure in the abdominal cavity and abdominal wall, which can also lead to hiccups. The third reason for hiccups is a precursor to tumor disease. Frequent hiccups are generally not a big problem, but doctors also remind that if frequent hiccups are accompanied by other symptoms, you need to be careful.

Frequent hiccups accompanied by periodic hunger pains and night pains may mean ulcers in the digestive tract or problems with the liver and gallbladder. If you have symptoms such as loss of appetite, weight loss, anemia, etc., and they last for more than 45 days, you must not take it lightly. It indicates the presence of tumors and other lesions in the body. Regulate the body to suppress hiccups First of all, diet is key.

Avoid greasy and irritating food, and do not eat too much of potatoes, corn, eggs, hot-dry noodles and other foods that are difficult to digest; quit smoking and drinking, develop good living habits, avoid overeating and excessive eating before going to bed; eat small meals frequently; secondly, if you experience heartburn, acid reflux, abdominal distension, and intestinal rumbling, you can take some drugs that promote gastric motility, such as metoclopramide or Pribos (cisapride) or mosapride.

Finally, strengthen physical exercise; pay special attention to maintaining a happy mood and a good state of mind. Anxious or depressed mental states can cause changes in the secretion of certain hormones and autonomic nervous function in the body, weakening or even stopping gastrointestinal motility and secretion, leading to functional dyspepsia.

Patients with aerophagia should try to avoid hiccups in their daily lives. Every time they feel like hiccuping, they can raise their heads. After a period of adjustment, this functional indigestion will gradually ease.
