Liver cancer is the king of cancers. The condition of patients with advanced liver cancer is relatively more serious, but it can also be alleviated through comprehensive treatment. Liver cancer belongs to the categories of "accumulation", "lumps", "jaundice", "swelling", and "flank pain" in traditional Chinese medicine. Liver cancer has the characteristics of hidden onset, long incubation period, high malignancy, rapid progression, strong invasiveness, easy metastasis, and poor prognosis. Its incidence rate is increasing year by year, and the treatment of advanced liver cancer is relatively more difficult. In recent years, with the progress of basic research on primary liver cancer, we have a deeper understanding of its pathogenesis, which has promoted the progress of clinical treatment. The preferred treatment for primary liver cancer is surgical resection, but most patients have lost the best time for surgical treatment when they are diagnosed. Therefore, the treatment of advanced liver cancer depends more on drug treatment, which mainly includes traditional Chinese medicine and chemotherapy. Traditional Chinese medicine has shown good anti-liver cancer effects in clinical and experimental studies. However, the effect of chemotherapy on liver cancer has always been poorly evaluated. Clinical research results show that the treatment of stage II liver cancer with traditional Chinese medicine is better than that with chemotherapy. The survival rates of patients treated with thiotepa and fluorouracil for one year were 8.9% and 9.9%, respectively, while the one-year survival rate of the traditional Chinese medicine treatment group was 38.7%; the median survival period was 45 days for fluorouracil, 3 to 8 months for doxorubicin, and 300 days for the traditional Chinese medicine group. Furthermore, liver cancer patients often have liver damage in addition to cirrhosis, and the toxic side effects of chemotherapy can further damage liver function. Chemotherapy is even more inappropriate in cases of active hepatitis, jaundice, ascites, nausea, vomiting, anemia, etc. According to current statistics, reports on clinical treatment with traditional Chinese medicine or a combination of traditional Chinese and Western medicine account for more than 92%. Therefore, traditional Chinese medicine treatment has become the main method for the treatment of middle and late stage liver cancer. Clinical experience has shown that if TCM is used to treat liver cancer accurately and with proper medication, it can not only quickly improve the symptoms of liver cancer such as liver pain, fever, abdominal distension, ascites, etc., but also effectively control the growth of tumors without toxic side effects. TCM is effective in treating liver cancer at all stages. It can be used as the main treatment for patients with liver cancer in the middle and late stages (especially those who are not suitable for chemotherapy in the late stage), and can also be used as an auxiliary treatment for surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy to improve the efficacy and reduce toxic side effects. The role of traditional Chinese medicine treatment before and after surgery In recent years, it has been confirmed that the spleen-strengthening and qi-regulating method can reduce the size of the tumor before liver cancer surgery, which is beneficial to resection and postoperative recovery. Since the 1990s, the clinical focus has been on how to turn large liver cancer into small liver cancer, thereby making more unresectable liver cancer resectable. The role of the spleen-strengthening method in this regard has been further explored, and promising results have emerged. Chemotherapy combined with the spleen-strengthening method in the treatment of large liver cancer has three major effects: (1) It can reduce the side effects of chemotherapy, improve liver function, enhance immune function, and increase the liver's tolerance to chemotherapy. (2) It can significantly promote the formation of fibrous capsules around liver cancer lesions, which is beneficial for surgery to retain more normal liver and is beneficial for postoperative recovery. (3) It can eliminate satellite lesions adjacent to the tumor to the greatest extent, increasing the possibility of turning liver cancer from incurable to curable. The leading role of Chinese medicine in the treatment of liver cancer According to observations, in the treatment of patients with liver cancer in the middle and late stages, in order to prevent chemotherapy from aggravating liver damage, Chinese medicine should be used as the main treatment, supplemented by Western chemotherapy. If the liver function is very poor, Chinese medicine alone can also be considered for treatment. Practice has shown that the use of Chinese medicine to strengthen the spleen and treat based on syndrome differentiation can improve the symptoms and signs of more than 90% of patients after taking the medicine, prolong their survival, and improve their quality of life.
