Sequelae of drowning

Sequelae of drowning

In the hot summer, many people like to go swimming. Since swimming involves contact with water, it actually carries great risks. For example, drowning is a common risk when swimming. For drowning people, even if the rescue is successful, some bad sequelae may occur. Therefore, when swimming, it is important to enhance the safety awareness of swimmers, especially children swimmers!

1. Are there any sequelae of drowning?

Whether drowning has any sequelae depends on the severity of the drowning. If it is serious, it will cause lack of oxygen and lead to cerebral palsy. In addition, it may cause damage to eyes, ears, etc.

2. The State of the Drowning Person

With few exceptions, a drowning person is physiologically unable to call for help. Because our respiratory system is designed to breathe. Voice is a secondary or overlapping function. So breathing must be completed before making any sound. And without being able to breathe, a drowning person cannot call for help.

A drowning person's mouth is always floating up and down in the water, so he cannot call for help. Instinctively, their bodies force their arms to paddle the surface so they can lift their mouths out of the water to breathe.

In an instinctive drowning response, a drowning person cannot voluntarily control their arm movements. Physiologically, a drowning person struggling on the surface of the water is unable to stop drowning and perform voluntary movements, such as waving for help, moving toward rescuers, or reaching for rescue equipment.

From the beginning to the end of the instinctive drowning reaction, people's bodies remain upright in the water with no support under their feet. Unless rescued by trained lifeguards, these drowning victims have only 20 to 60 seconds to struggle before completely sinking.

So usually people who are drowning will have the following symptoms:

3. How to avoid drowning?

1. Children should understand safety precautions and self-rescue methods

Tell your children to remember what their teachers and parents have taught them, and not to swim in dangerous waters without permission. Give timely and kind reminders to friends who are swimming in waters without safety facilities or guarantees. If the reminders are blocked, inform their parents or water area managers to avoid drowning accidents. If you cannot swim and accidentally fall into the water, do not panic and struggle. You can quickly take simple self-rescue measures: tilt your head back with your mouth upward, put your hands underwater without moving, and be in a semi-floating state. Generally, your mouth and nose will be exposed above the water. Breathe evenly. After maintaining your body balance, you can slowly paddle backwards underwater with your hands.

2. Schools should focus on education methods and first aid skills

Schools should provide safety education to children through the use of specific cases, pictures, videos, event simulations and other methods, striving to make the education lasting and ingrained in children's minds, so that they realize the importance of staying away from dangerous waters, and learn to cherish life, and then internalize the education into children's conscious awareness and instinctive actions. During weekends and holidays, we must communicate well with parents to reduce the possibility of students going to dangerous waters. If conditions permit, schools can offer swimming lessons and teach children first aid skills for those in distress in water.
