Who is prone to cholestasis

Cholestasis is a liver disease that causes great damage to people's organs and can also cause many other adverse reactions such as nausea and vomiting. Patients with cholestasis often experience symptoms such as loss of appetite and itching, and in severe cases may even suffer from jaundice. Especially for pregnant women, suffering from cholestasis will not only affect the health of pregnant women, but also affect the fetus. So, who is prone to cholestasis?

Who is most likely to suffer from cholestasis?

The most common type of cholestasis is gestational cholestasis. Basically, 2-3 out of 100 pregnant women will have different forms of cholestasis. Cholestasis of pregnancy is a disease that only occurs during pregnancy and disappears after the pregnancy ends. Pruritus occurs before jaundice appears, and jaundice is usually mild or moderate, much milder than itching. Pruritus first appears in the second and third trimesters of pregnancy, is more severe at night, and has no specific rash. Severe cases may affect the health of the fetus.

How to treat cholestasis during pregnancy

Cholestasis during pregnancy is very harmful to the fetus and can easily cause premature birth, low birth weight, fetal intrauterine distress and neonatal asphyxia. If pregnant women experience skin itching, they should get checked out promptly. The increase in serum conjugated bile acid before the onset of itching or the increase in serum alanine aminotransferase is a reliable indicator for early diagnosis. There is currently no specific drug treatment. In order to prevent postpartum hemorrhage, vitamin K should be supplemented before delivery. If jaundice occurs or monitoring indicates possible fetal hypoxia, the patient should be hospitalized early and delivery should be ended promptly if necessary. The patient should also be alert to heavy bleeding after delivery.
