Does soil have an anti-inflammatory effect on wounds?

Bumps and bruises are inevitable in life, which can cause skin injuries and bleeding. If the wound is not treated with anti-inflammatory and sterilization in time, it may cause inflammation and become more and more serious. Some people think that applying soil on wounds can have an anti-inflammatory effect. In fact, this practice is wrong because soil contains a lot of bacteria. Let's take a look at whether soil has an anti-inflammatory effect on wounds.

Traditional remedy: spit disinfection

Many people use saliva for disinfection. Science has proven that although saliva contains some bactericidal enzymes, its disinfection effect is limited. Moreover, saliva itself contains certain bacteria, which may have the opposite effect. It is particularly noteworthy that if the person providing saliva suffers from oral diseases such as caries, candidiasis or periodontal disease, the bacterial components in the saliva will greatly increase the risk of wound infection.

Traditional remedy: "Incense ash hemostasis method"

Some people sprinkle incense ashes on wounds. If we only talk about the effect of stopping bleeding, incense ash does have the effect of stopping bleeding. Because these particulate substances have adsorption function, they can absorb exudate at the bleeding site and stimulate the contraction of local small blood vessels, thus achieving a temporary hemostatic effect. However, incense ash may carry a large number of bacteria, even pathogens, which can easily lead to wound contamination and cause wound infection.

Traditional method of "crushed grass"

When people get injured accidentally while playing outside, the elderly often crush wild grass and apply it to the wound. Although some weeds have certain bactericidal and disinfecting effects, there is no guarantee that they themselves are clean and sterile. Therefore, it is not recommended to use this method for disinfection without ensuring that they are clean.

Traditional method of salt

Table salt does help inhibit bacterial growth, but it cannot be used as a human disinfectant. Because it dehydrates human tissue and causes severe pain. What's more serious is that if salt is sprinkled directly on the wound, a large amount of water will seep out, aggravating blood concentration and possibly causing necrosis of injured skin cells. At the same time, salt is absorbed into the blood and can easily cause hypernatremia, and may also cause neurological symptoms and even shock.

It is recommended that you use the above three disinfection "folk remedies" with caution. Here are two scientific and commonly used disinfection methods recommended to you. You can choose one according to the condition of your wound.

Method 1: Iodine

Medical iodine tincture has a lower concentration and is less irritating, so it can be used directly to disinfect the skin and mucous membranes in most cases. Compared with iodine tincture, iodine tincture is more irritating and will cause a more obvious burning pain to the wound. It can be used to disinfect general injuries such as minor contusions and abrasions. Alcohol can be used to disinfect small wounds, but it is highly irritating and is not suitable for disinfecting damaged mucosa, otherwise it may aggravate mucosal damage and delay healing.

Method 2: Hydrogen Peroxide

Hydrogen peroxide is not very irritating and has disinfecting, antiseptic, deodorizing and cleaning properties. It is recommended to be kept on hand at home. It can be used to clean wounds, ulcers, pustules, and pus in the ears. Its disadvantage is that it is not stable and is easy to deteriorate. Note: Hydrogen peroxide should not come into contact with eyes and damaged skin of the external auditory canal, otherwise it may affect vision and hearing.
