The abdomen is a part of the human body that will not affect people's normal behavior unless something unexpected happens. Symptoms of the disease may occur even without noticing. For example, the problem of diet. People’s living conditions are better now, but their diet is irregular and they often overeat. Or eating some raw, cold and spicy food may lead to various diseases in the human body. So what is the cause of upper abdominal pain? 1. Indigestion Indigestion usually occurs after eating. When you eat, your stomach produces more acid to digest the food, but sometimes the acid can irritate the lining of your digestive system. 2. Acid Reflux and Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease Acid reflux occurs when stomach acid enters the esophagus. Acid reflux usually causes chest and throat pain and is often referred to as heartburn. This feeling may be accompanied by pain in the upper abdomen. 3. Overeating Although the stomach is flexible, overeating can cause it to expand beyond its normal capacity. If the stomach expands too much, it can put pressure on the organs around the stomach and cause upper abdominal pain. Overeating can also lead to indigestion, acid reflux, and heartburn. 4. Lactose Intolerance Lactose intolerance can be another cause of upper abdominal pain. Lactose is mainly found in milk and other dairy products. People with lactose intolerance have difficulty breaking down lactose. 5. Drinking Moderate drinking is usually not enough to cause gastrointestinal distress. However, drinking a large amount at one time or drinking excessively for a long time can cause inflammation of the gastric mucosa. This inflammation can lead to upper abdominal pain and other digestive problems. 6. Esophagitis and gastritis Esophagitis and gastritis can be caused by acid reflux, infection, and irritation from certain medications. Certain immune system disorders may also cause inflammation. If this inflammation is not treated, scar tissue or bleeding can occur. 7. Hiatal Hernia A hiatal hernia occurs when part of the stomach pushes through the diaphragm into the chest cavity. This may be due to an accident or a weakening of the diaphragm muscle. 8. Peptic ulcer disease Bacterial infection of the stomach or small intestinal mucosa or long-term use of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) can cause peptic ulcers. Symptoms of peptic ulcer disease include upper abdominal pain and signs of internal bleeding, such as stomach pain, fatigue, and shortness of breath. 9. Gallbladder disease Gallbladder problems may also cause upper abdominal pain. Gallstones may block the opening of the gallbladder, or the gallbladder may become inflamed. 10. Pregnancy It is common to feel mild upper abdominal pain during pregnancy. This is usually caused by acid reflux or pressure on the abdomen from the expanding uterus. Hormone changes during pregnancy can also worsen acid reflux and upper abdominal pain. Severe or persistent upper abdominal pain during pregnancy may be a sign of a serious medical condition and should be treated with medical attention. |
