Meningioma growth rate

Meningioma growth rate

A meningioma is a tumor that grows in the brain. It is divided into intracranial meningioma and ectopic meningioma. The former is generally accompanied by many complications, which can lead to symptoms such as hearing impairment and unclear thinking. The latter does not have complications. Meningiomas can be divided into benign and malignant. Benign tumors are less harmful than malignant tumors and grow more slowly. Malignant meningiomas grow very quickly, so they need to be treated differently.

1. Meningioma refers to a tumor originating from the meningeal epithelium. It is the most common primary tumor in the brain. Most of them grow slowly and have clear boundaries. A few are malignant or anaplastic. This type of meningioma grows relatively quickly. Generally speaking, benign meningiomas grow slowly, with an average growth rate of 2-4 mm in diameter per year. However, some meningiomas are completely calcified and have remained stable after years of observation. Some meningiomas grow rapidly and may be accompanied by edema of the surrounding tissues. Therefore, small, asymptomatic benign meningiomas can be observed regularly. If they grow rapidly, surgical treatment should be considered immediately.

2. Different meningiomas grow at different rates. Even if they are benign, some types may grow faster. So it cannot be said that benign meningiomas grow slowly. Patients and their families need to go to a regular hospital to see a professional doctor. If necessary, surgical resection and pathological results are required to confirm what type of meningioma it is and whether it grows very fast.

3. This situation cannot be generalized, perhaps the radial position is different. But in any case, it is recommended that surgery is better for tumors of the nervous system. The main treatments for benign head tumors are surgery or gamma knife therapy. Guidance: The main harm of benign tumors is that they compress the surrounding brain tissue and cause discomfort. The symptoms disappear after resection and will not affect survival. The cost of treatment depends on the location and size of the tumor.

4. Many asymptomatic meningiomas are discovered accidentally, generally grow slowly, and most are benign. Regular follow-up after meningioma surgery is critical. If some tumor remains at the primary site after the first surgery, tumor recurrence may occur. Surgical resection remains the preferred method for treating recurrent meningioma.

5. The occurrence of meningioma may be related to certain internal environment changes and gene mutations, and is not caused by a single factor. It may be related to factors such as craniocerebral trauma, radiation exposure, viral infection, and combined bilateral acoustic neuromas. It is generally believed that the division rate of arachnoid cells is very slow. The above factors accelerate the cell division rate and may be an important early stage leading to cell degeneration.
