How long does a new mattress usually last?

After decorating a house, people generally cannot rush to move in, because some furniture contains formaldehyde, which is very harmful to the human body. Similarly, some newly purchased furniture cannot be used immediately, and newly purchased mattresses generally contain relatively small amounts of toxic chemicals, so they need to be placed for a while before they can be used. So how long should a newly bought mattress be kept before it can be used again?

New mattresses made from synthetic materials often contain at least small amounts of harmful chemicals, such as common flame retardants. Moreover, the packaging bag of the mattress will seal in these odors, preventing harmful gases from volatilizing. When we use it, it will have harmful effects on our body. Many people will leave their mattresses air-conditioned for at least a few days and then sprinkle them with baking soda to eliminate any lingering odors.

Both methods work well, but there are some issues to be aware of when using them.

Let the mattress smell out

Putting it outdoors to let the odor dissipate is a very good method, especially putting it in the sun for a few days, but for mattresses made of certain materials, ultraviolet rays will accelerate its aging, so we must pay attention to this. Secondly, pay attention to the time when ventilating. Some people think that the mattress can be left alone for 72 hours after purchase, but we tell you that such a short time is not enough. No matter what material the mattress is made of, the ventilation time must be at least 5-7 days. If the irritating odor is more serious, it will take about 15 days, and it is necessary to turn it over frequently.

If it is placed indoors, be sure to open doors and windows for air circulation.

By using baking soda

If the mattress still has an odor after blowing it out, sprinkle baking soda on it and let it sit overnight to absorb it. The next day, sprinkle baking soda on the other side of the mattress, let it sit overnight again, and then vacuum it up. If the mattress smells bad enough that you notice it standing anywhere in the same room, we place bowls of vinegar around the room with the door closed and let the vinegar absorb the odor from the air overnight.

Finally, we recommend that no matter what type of newly purchased mattress you buy, you should ventilate it as much as possible to remove odors before using it.
