How to determine whether digestive bacteria survive

When raising fish at home, nitrifying bacteria are often used, which can promote the ecological balance of the fish tank. It can convert some organic waste in the fish tank into inorganic waste, thus preventing some bacteria from multiplying and destroying the ecological balance of the fish tank. How to determine whether nitrifying bacteria are alive? The main thing is to see whether such a system has been established. Generally speaking, if the water is relatively clear and has no odor, it means that the nitrifying bacteria will continue to survive.

How to determine whether digestive bacteria are alive

The water is clear and has no odor. If live bacteria are not added artificially, it will take a relatively long time to form naturally. If the filter material bed is suitable, the nitrification system can definitely be established. As long as the density is not too high and it is supplemented by daily partial water changes, the aquarium can be completely balanced.

Nitrifying bacteria are chemotrophic organisms

Autotrophic aerobic bacteria use carbon dioxide as a carbon source and oxidize ammonia or ammonium salts into nitrates through metabolism. Can be grown on medium that does not contain organic carbon. Nitrifying bacteria are producers in the food chain. It is an aerobic bacteria, including nitrite bacteria and nitrate bacteria. Living in oxygenated water or sand layers, it plays an important role in the nitrogen cycle and water purification process.

Classification of nitrifying bacteria:

Nitrifying bacteria are autotrophic prokaryotes that include two completely different metabolic groups: nitrosomonas and nitrobacter, which include morphologically distinct rods, cocci, and spirals. Nitrosogenic bacteria include bacteria in the genera Nitrosomonas, Nitrosococcus, Nitrosospira, and Nitrosolobus. Nitrate bacteria include bacteria in the genera Nitrobacter, Nitrococcus and Nitrocystis.

Both types of bacteria are obligate aerobic bacteria and use oxygen as the final electron acceptor during the oxidation process. Most of them are obligate chemosynthetic autotrophs and cannot grow on organic culture media, such as Nitrosomonas, Nitrosospira, Nitrosococcus, Nitrosolobus, Nitrospina, Nitrococcus, etc. Only a few are facultative autotrophic and can grow on certain organic media, such as some strains of Nitrobacter winogradskyi. From the morphological point of view, there are also diversity, such as spherical, rod-shaped, spiral, etc., but they are all non-spore-forming Gram-negative bacteria; some have flagella and can move, such as Nitrosomonas, which move by flagella all over the body; some have no flagella and cannot move, such as Nitrosomonas.

They are generally distributed in soil, fresh water and sea water. Some bacteria are only found in sea water, such as Nitrococcus and Nitrosporus. There is no need to purchase nitrifying bacteria specifically. Once the oxygen content and organic matter in the fish tank reach normal levels, a stable colony can be established in about a week. Nitrifying bacteria are not drugs. Once they are stabilized, as long as the environment does not change drastically (such as adding fungicides or pouring boiling water), they can continue to reproduce for a long time without the need for any additives.

Existence conditions:

Survival conditions of nitrifying bacteria: Nitrifying bacteria need water and a high level of oxygen to survive, so they can only live in various microporous filter materials such as biochemical cotton, biochemical balls, glass rings, and ceramic rings. They can only survive if they have both water and oxygen. Nitrifying bacteria live best in slightly alkaline water, and grow and reproduce fastest when the temperature reaches around 25 degrees. Its reproduction does not follow the law of segregation and the law of independent assortment.
