How is white sugar made

White sugar is a food that is rich in sweetness and an indispensable condiment in life. White sugar plays a very important role in our daily life and has a wide range of uses. For example, when making cakes or desserts, people cannot do without white sugar. The main component of the white sugar that we usually use is sucrose, which is extracted from plants such as sugarcane. So, how is white sugar made?

1. How is white sugar made?

Sugar is a natural product. It comes from two plants: sugar beets and sugar cane. Let’s take beets as an example to look at the sugar production process.

1. [Beet collection] Beet prefers a mild climate, and the sugar is stored in the roots of the beets.

2. [Sugar factory] The harvested sugar beets are sent to the sugar factory, where workers refine sugar in the factory.

3. [Cut the beets into small pieces] Wash the beets and cut them into small pieces. Then pour hot water over them. The sugar will dissolve in the hot water and become "sugar water".

4. [Pure syrup] After removing impurities, the "sugar water" is sent into the boiler to boil. Most of the water is evaporated and the sugar water becomes concentrated syrup.

5. [Thousands of crystals] In order to make the syrup into crystals, you must first pour the syrup into a special boiler, and then add some extremely small sugar cubes. This will form countless sugar crystals. However, the temperature of heating the syrup cannot be too high, otherwise it will turn into caramel.

6【Dehydration】The syrup filled with crystals passes through a high-speed rotating sieve, and the crystals are separated from the water. The water flows away from the small holes of the sieve, and the crystals remain in the sieve.

7. [Granular or powdered] Sugar crystal particles are screened by size and made into icing sugar, fine white sugar and sugar cubes. When making sugar cubes, workers put wet and hot crystals into small molds. After drying, the crystals become sugar cubes.

2. The effects of rock sugar and brown sugar

Rock sugar nourishes yin and produces body fluid, moistens the lungs and relieves cough. It has a good auxiliary therapeutic effect on dry cough, dry cough without sputum, and sputum with blood. Although brown sugar contains more impurities, its nutrients are better retained. It has the effects of invigorating qi, relieving stomach discomfort, helping the spleen to digest food, replenishing blood and removing blood stasis, and also has the effect of dispelling cold and relieving pain. Therefore, women who suffer from dysmenorrhea caused by cold and physical weakness or after childbirth often have significant effects by drinking some brown sugar water.
