We usually see people with black eyes, and occasionally we see people with blue eyes, who are usually foreigners. But in fact, there are some yellow people around us who also have blue eyes, but not as pure blue as foreigners. There is a professional medical explanation for blue eyes, which is caused by disease. So, what exactly is going on when eyes turn blue? Blue eyes usually refer to the white part of the eyes. The bluish whites of the eyes, medically known as blue sclera, occur as a result of chronic iron deficiency. The mechanism of its formation is: iron is a very important substance in the collagen tissue on the surface of the sclera. Iron deficiency can make the sclera thinner. When it cannot cover the dark blue choroid under the sclera, the white of the eye will appear blue. The whites of the eyes should be porcelain white or light blue. If the color changes to yellow, especially when it appears yellow in sunlight, it may be a sign of liver disease or hemolysis (i.e., the lysis and destruction of a large number of red blood cells). It is very interesting that the depth of yellow often represents the severity of jaundice: the darker the color, the more severe the jaundice; the lighter the color, the milder the jaundice. Moreover, the appearance of jaundice on the sclera is earlier than the yellowing of the skin, so doctors can detect the problem in advance. The white of the eye turns purple and is slightly raised, and the eye hurts, which tells people that the sclera is inflamed. If a person with a head injury finds that the white of the eye is covered with blood and is bright red, be alert that there is a high possibility of eye socket injury or severe head and brain injury, and the injury is probably not light. There is also a rare melanosis, which shows black marble-like stripes on the sclera. However, a few simple brown or gray-black pigment spots are scleral pigment spots, not a disease. Iron anemia Iron deficiency anemia refers to anemia caused by erythropoiesis disorder in which the body's stored iron for hemoglobin production has been exhausted. It is characterized by a lack of stainable iron in the bone marrow, liver, spleen and other tissues, a decrease in serum ferritin concentration, and both serum iron concentration and serum transferrin saturation are reduced. It manifests as microcytic hypochromic anemia. |
