Why are cherries bitter?

Why are cherries bitter?

Cherries are a very common fruit for many people. Cherries not only taste sweet and sour, but also juicy and delicious. They are very popular among the public. Cherries also contain a large amount of vitamins and various nutrients. Regular consumption is not only good for the body, but also has a beauty effect. Generally, cherries taste sweet and sour. If cherries are bitter, they may be spoiled or unripe, so it is best not to eat them.

What causes cherries to be bitter ?

It is best not to eat cherries that are bitter until you find out the reason.

Cherries may turn bitter because the fruit has gone bad due to improper storage, or because they are of poor variety. For the sake of your own health, it is best not to eat them.

There are many reasons why cherries become bitter. It may be a problem with the variety. Some early-ripening cherry varieties taste a bit bitter; cherries are picked when they are not fully ripe and refrigerated. Such cherries are easy to deteriorate and taste bitter; cherries are kept in a cold and humid environment for a long time, resulting in a lack of photosynthesis in the fruit trees and insufficient nutrients, which will make the fructose content of the fruit insufficient. The less sweetness can hardly cover up the slight sour and bitter taste inherent in the fruit, so the fruit will have a prominent sour and bitter taste.

How to choose cherries

1. When choosing cherries, it is best to choose those with stems to ensure that the cherries are fresh. If there are no stems, they may be cherries picked from a diseased tree or cherries that have fallen.

2. Look at the color of the cherries. Cherries with deep red or dark red appearance are usually sweeter. The dark red ones are the sweetest, and the bright red ones are slightly sour.

3. Look at the skin of the cherries. What people fear most when eating fruit is eating bugs. The same goes for cherries. It is better to have a slightly hard skin because fruit flies cannot drill into such cherries and will not leave insect eggs. Leave room for insects to live.

4. Cherries with shiny skin are the healthiest, freshest and most delicious. The skin of ripe and healthy cherries will have the natural roundness and luster of the fruit. The most important thing when eating cherries is freshness. If there are wrinkles on the surface of the cherry skin, it means that the fruit is dehydrated and may be spoiled or lacking moisture. Never choose such cherries.

5. The size of cherries is a matter of variety and has nothing to do with the sweetness of the taste. Generally speaking, the flesh of large cherries is tougher, while the flesh of small cherries is relatively softer. When choosing, pay more attention to the shape of the cherry root. The more concave this place is, the sweeter the cherry will be.

6. The fruit stalk is an important indicator of freshness. When cherries are first picked, the stems are green. After being stored for a long time, they begin to turn black and their nutritional value is greatly reduced, so it is not recommended to buy them.

How to store cherries

1. Do not wash fresh cherries first. Put them in a paper box with the stems, and then put the box in the refrigerator. This way they can be stored for 3 to 7 days. They will easily rot if they are stored for more than a week.

2. The most suitable temperature for storing cherries is 2°C-5°C. Be careful not to use plastic bags or plastic boxes to store cherries, because they have poor air permeability and can easily cause the cherries to rot and deteriorate. In addition, the fruit stems cannot be removed, as removing the stems will cause the fruit to rot easily.
