What is the reason for crooked mouth and eyes

If you find that you have a crooked mouth and eyes, you need to go for relevant examinations. After all, the cause of this condition is not so clear now. Most patients are probably caused by catching a cold, which will cause blood circulation disorders, so it will damage the facial nerves and cause facial nerve paralysis, which will cause this series of symptoms. As long as it is treated, it will improve.

The exact cause of facial nerve paralysis is still unclear. It is generally believed that because the facial nerve is located in the limited space of the facial nerve canal, various reasons including cold, blood circulation disorders, infection, etc. can damage the facial nerve to varying degrees, thereby causing facial nerve paralysis.

There are two types of facial nerve palsy:

1. Central facial nerve palsy

If only the lower facial nerve is damaged (manifested by crooked mouth, drooling, inability to puff cheeks or whistle, but able to close eyes and frown), it means that the lesion is in the brain, and the facial nerve paralysis symptoms are only a local reflection of other brain lesions (mostly stroke), which is called central facial nerve paralysis;

2. Peripheral facial nerve paralysis

If both the upper and lower facial nerves are damaged at the same time (the clinical manifestations include crooked mouth, drooling, inability to puff cheeks and whistle, as well as inability to close eyes and frown), it means that the lesion occurs in the facial nerve itself and has nothing to do with the central nervous system, so it is called peripheral facial nerve paralysis.

Central facial nerve palsy

The treatment of central facial nerve paralysis is mainly based on etiological treatment of central lesions, and there is no need to take special treatment measures for facial lesions.

2. Peripheral facial nerve paralysis

For peripheral facial nerve paralysis, as long as it is treated in time, most people can recover completely within 1 to 2 months. It has been reported that even without treatment, about 80% of patients can heal themselves or almost recover. However, since facial nerve paralysis affects appearance, eating and speaking, especially the inability to close the eyes causes the cornea to lose moisture and become dry, which can then cause ulcers and even affect vision, active treatment is also required.

(1) Eye-covering hot compress massage First, relieve the patient's mental concerns and cover the affected eye with clean gauze to prevent dust from entering. If conditions permit, apply ointment on the gauze; use a hot towel or hot water bottle to apply hot compress to the affected side of the face. At the same time, use the palm of your hand to do facial massage, moving from the corner of the mouth to the ear.

(2) Hormones: After entering the hospital, the patient can be given corticosteroid treatment, such as prednisone, which can be taken for one week and then gradually reduced in dosage.

(3) Others: Combined with intramuscular injection of vitamin B12, local massage, physical therapy, and electroacupuncture treatment, the efficacy for patients with acute attacks can reach over 90%.
