The difference between black rosewood and red rosewood

There is a big difference between black rosewood and red rosewood. There are differences in appearance. Whether it is fragrance or smell, it will be slightly worse than red rosewood. Although the two are similar, they should be distinguished in color and appearance. If people do not really understand the difference between black rosewood and red rosewood, they can read the following article.

Black rosewood morphological characteristics

Dalbergia cultrate Grah. Diffuse porous wood. The growth rings are not obvious or slightly obvious. The newly cut surface of the heartwood is purple-black or purple-reddish-brown, often with dark brown or chestnut brown stripes. The pores are slightly visible to the naked eye, with a maximum tangential diameter of 182 μm and an average of 118 μm; the number is very few to slightly few, 0 to 12/mm2. There are more axial parenchyma tissues, which are obvious to the naked eye and are mainly in the form of concentric layers, waves, paravascular bands and thin lines. Wood fiber wall thickness. Wood rays are invisible to the naked eye; wave marks are visible under a magnifying glass; ray tissue is of the same shape and in a single row. And multiple columns (mostly 2~3 columns). The newly cut surface has a sour aroma; the structure is fine; the texture is quite straight; the air-dry density is 0.89-1.14g/cm3. Dalbergia fusca pierre is a diffuse porous wood. The growth rings are not obvious or slightly obvious, with a maximum tangential diameter of 275 μm and an average of 143 μm; containing black gum; the number is very few to slightly few, 1 to 6/mm2. The axial parenchyma is quite obvious, mainly in the form of concentric narrow bands (2 to several cells wide). The wood fiber walls are very thick. Wood rays are obvious under a magnifying glass; so are the ripple marks; the ray tissue is of the same shape, with single and multiple rows (mostly 2 to 4 rows). No acid aroma or very weak; fine structure; oblique or staggered texture; air-dry density 1.04~1.20g/cm3.

Morphological characteristics of rosewood

The national standard "Redwood" stipulates that red rosewood has the following four necessary conditions:

①Dalbergia species;

② The wood structure is fine to very fine, with an average tube pore diameter of no more than 200 microns;

③ When the moisture content of wood is 12%, the air-dry density is greater than 0.85g/cm3;

④The heartwood of the wood is reddish brown to purple-red. The difference between red rosewood and black rosewood lies in the color of the heartwood. The color of black rosewood is chestnut brown, often with black stripes. They are all rosewood, but the material of red rosewood is different. The heartwood color can be dark or light, and the color can be roughly divided into reddish and brownish. Reddish rosewood: the newly cut heartwood is lemon red, reddish brown to purple-reddish brown, often with obvious black stripes, heavy density, air-dry density 1.0 g/cm3, and the main producing area is Indochina Peninsula. The color of the heartwood varies from light to dark, with the lighter color being yellowish and the texture being straighter. The red rosewood commonly seen on the market has straighter texture, with some chestnut-brown stripes similar to those of black rosewood, which are called "green veins" in the industry, just like the blue veins under human skin - blood vessels. The color of high-quality rosewood will become darker after being stored for a long time, from deep date red to purple red, which is quite similar to the color of red sandalwood. The wood is as fine as Dalbergia louboutinensis, and it is the best quality rosewood. Brownish rosewood: The newly cut heartwood is purple-brown or dark reddish-brown, often with black-brown or chestnut-brown stripes. It is produced in Southeast Asia. The heartwood of high quality is purple-red or dark reddish brown, and the tangential section has fish skin texture similar to that of the belly of yellow croaker. There are also types of rosewood with special textures. Some have light-colored stripes like muscle fibers on the tangential section, which slightly resemble the "V"-shaped texture of rosewood; some have tangential-section patterns that are twisted, exaggerated, and gorgeous.
