The best medicine for migraine

Migraine is a relatively common type of headache in life, which brings great trouble to patients. Sometimes the pain is quite severe, and sometimes the headache occurs without any signs. When a migraine occurs, it can be treated with certain medications, mainly some painkillers. The more common ones are acetaminophen, ibuprofen and other drugs. The treatment effect is good. Let us learn about it.

Acetaminophen

Also known as paracetamol, it is a commonly used over-the-counter antipyretic, analgesic and anti-inflammatory drug. It produces antipyretic and analgesic effects by inhibiting the synthesis of prostaglandins. It is suitable for relieving acute attacks of mild to moderate migraines. Its compound preparation Sanlitong is also a frequently used drug for migraine patients. Its main ingredients are acetaminophen, isopropyl antipyrine and caffeine. Caffeine is a central nervous system stimulant. When used in combination with acetaminophen, it can enhance the analgesic effect and is suitable for the treatment of acute attacks of migraine.

Ibuprofen

Like acetaminophen, it is an over-the-counter drug for antipyretics, analgesics and anti-inflammatory. It produces analgesic effects by inhibiting cyclooxygenase and reducing the synthesis of prostaglandins. Its effects are stronger than acetaminophen and it is suitable for relieving acute attacks of migraine. Both ordinary preparations and sustained-release preparations of this drug can be used. Sustained-release preparations such as ibuprofen have a longer-lasting effect and are more convenient to take once every 12 hours. Naproxen, which has similar effects to this drug, is also commonly used to treat mild to moderate migraines.

Pizothiazine

It has strong anti-histamine and 5-hydroxytryptamine effects and weak anti-acetylcholine effects, and can inhibit the pain-inducing effect of bradykinin on nerve endings. It is suitable for the prevention and treatment of migraine, and can alleviate symptoms and the number of attacks, but it has no immediate relief effect on acute attacks of migraine. The usual dosage is 0.5-1 mg each time (1-2 tablets), 1-3 times a day. Cyproheptadine, which has similar pharmacological effects, can also be used to prevent and treat frequent migraine attacks, 2 to 4 mg (1 to 2 tablets) orally 3 times a day.

Ergotamine Caffeine

Each tablet of this preparation contains 1 mg of ergotamine tartrate and 100 mg of caffeine. The ergotamine mainly acts directly on the contraction of smooth muscles and is related to the stimulation of 5-hydroxytryptamine receptors, thereby restoring the excessive dilation and pulsation of cerebral arteries to normal, thereby relieving headaches. Caffeine can enhance the efficacy of ergotamine and reduce side effects. This preparation is mainly used to relieve symptoms in patients with severe migraine. It is suitable for short-term use during a headache attack. The effect will be better if it can be used during the prodromal stage of migraine. Since this drug has no preventive or curative effect on migraine, and continuous use will increase the occurrence of adverse reactions and the possibility of addiction, the usage and dosage must be strictly controlled. Generally, 1 to 2 tablets are taken orally for the first time. If it is ineffective, take 1 to 2 tablets after 0.5 to 1 hour. The total amount per day for each attack should not exceed 6 tablets, and no more than 10 tablets within a week.
