What to do if your eyeball is stabbed by a hard object

Because of accidentally falling or not keeping your body steady, your eyes may be accidentally pierced by hard objects. Check whether there is bleeding or swelling. If so, give tetanus antibiotics as soon as possible for treatment, and continue to observe the development of the eyes. If the injury is serious, you need to go to the hospital for examination as soon as possible.

Treatment options

Eye injuries should be treated as an emergency. Chemical injuries to the eyes should be immediately rinsed thoroughly with clean water and then further examined. If the wound is contaminated or deep, appropriate antibiotics should be used and tetanus antitoxin should be injected.

Superficial injury treatment

1. For foreign objects on the surface of the eyeball, the conjunctival sac can be flushed first. If the foreign body has not been removed, it should be removed using sterile methods under surface anesthesia. Try not to injure surrounding and deep tissues during removal. The fluorescent agent dripped in must be sterile to prevent contamination by Pseudomonas aeruginosa and other substances. For foreign bodies deep in the cornea, preparation for intraocular surgery should be made and they can be removed from the front layer if necessary. In principle, for multiple foreign bodies, those protruding from the surface should be removed in stages.

2. Eyelid or conjunctival lacerations must be cleaned thoroughly, sutured carefully, and the skin and tissue must be preserved as much as possible. Do not remove them casually. The sutures were removed on the 5th postoperative day.

3. After the operation, apply antibiotic eye ointment or sulfonamide eye ointment into the conjunctival sac and cover the injured eye. If necessary, cover both eyes.

4. Those suspected of infection should be given anti-infection treatment.

5. After superficial injuries, you can apply trauma eye drops externally.

Treatment of eye contusion

1. Those with serious injuries should rest in bed and take semi-liquid food.

2. Bandage the injured eye.

3. The treatment for conjunctival laceration and superficial corneal abrasion is the same as that for superficial eye injury. Apply cold compress initially for subcutaneous hemorrhage of the eyelid, and switch to moist hot compress after 48 hours.
