Why does my skin itch as if there are bugs crawling on it?

This condition on the skin is likely a symptom caused by scabies infection. You must pay attention to personal hygiene and wash contaminated clothes, bedding, sheets, etc. with boiling water to kill the insects. If you cannot wash them with boiling water, you must expose them to the sun for more than 1 week before using them.

What are the common early symptoms of scabies?

1. In the early stages of scabies, red papules the size of rice grains will form on the skin, and blisters will form on the skin over time. Scabies mites can spread from one part of the skin to another, causing scabies to form on multiple parts of the patient's skin. The most typical symptom of scabies is severe itching, which is often unbearable. Patients will constantly scratch their skin, leaving a large number of scratches on the body surface. These conditions will heal quickly and then scabs will form. After the scabs fall off, pigment spots will form on the skin.

2. The itching symptoms of scabies usually worsen at night. The reason is that scabies are nocturnal and often active at night, so the itching is more severe at night. Scabies first appears between a person's fingers, and common sites of infection include the flexor side of the wrist, anterior axilla, areola, umbilicus, genitals, and inner thighs. Scabies in infants and young children is more likely to appear on the skin of the head, face and neck.

3. The skin lesions caused by scabies will further develop, especially due to scratching, which will lead to secondary infection. The lesions will show eczema-like changes, local suppuration, lichen-like changes, etc. Scabies that grow on the glans penis, scrotum can continue to develop into brown nodules, and in more serious cases can even cause wheals all over the body. The secretions of scabies may cause allergies in patients and trigger urticaria.

Scabies is a highly contagious skin disease. Scabies mites and their eggs will remain on clothes, pants and bedding. Therefore, clothes and bedding used by patients should be boiled in boiling water regularly to disinfect them. This will completely kill the mites and eggs remaining in these places to avoid repeated infections and become untreatable.
