As for why people can tell fortunes, one possibility is that they learn it in this life; the second possibility is that they bring their spiritual powers from past lives.

No matter what kind of spirit it is, it needs incense and offerings. There are many people who worship the spirit in the countryside. Some are white foxes, Guan Erye, Guanyin, God of Wealth, Kitchen God... and so on. These are the so-called spirits that people worship when they hear the term "honoring the spirit". There must be something that people cannot solve, or something that people cannot understand. As for whether this energy has independent self-consciousness and thinking, I don't know, but it feels very sinister and evil.
