Gas accumulation is actually similar to bloating. The most common thing in life is stomach bloating. The reason for colon gas accumulation is that the gas retained in the stomach and intestines exceeds the volume it can accommodate, which causes bloating. Many people have experienced the feeling of bloating. The most common one is the feeling of bloating when eating too much. This is because the food is eaten too quickly and there is no time to decompose, causing the gas volume to be compressed, which also forms bloating. After bloating, farting will increase.

Gastrointestinal flatulence is very common in clinical practice, and is often manifested as belching, abdominal distension, abdominal pain, and flatulence (farting).

Sources of gastrointestinal gas:

A normal adult retains a small amount of gas, about 100-150 ml, in the gastrointestinal tract every day. When the amount of gas increases, gastrointestinal bloating occurs.

Second, food is fermented by bacteria in the intestines to produce gas.

Third, the gas diffuses from the blood vessels to the intestinal cavity.

Excretion of gastrointestinal gas:

It is discharged through the mouth as belching and through the anus as flatus, and most of it is absorbed by the intestinal wall.

Mechanism of gastrointestinal flatulence:

1. Swallowing of large amounts of air: Aerophagia can cause swallowing of large amounts of air. When mental factors or certain gastrointestinal diseases increase saliva, more air can be swallowed along with the saliva. Drinking large amounts of water or beverages can also cause swallowing of air.

2. Intestinal emptying disorder: When intestinal obstruction or weakened intestinal wall tension occurs, excess gas and fluid may accumulate in the intestine. 3. Indigestion: Rough foods high in fiber can increase the intestinal capacity and affect normal peristalsis, causing abdominal distension. Long-term use of broad-spectrum antibiotics can inhibit normal intestinal flora and cause food fermentation to produce gas.

Gas-producing foods that are high in starch, such as radish, potato, sweet potato, taro, pumpkin, chestnut, etc., which are rich in starch, sugar, and cellulose, plus the meat we eat, will produce large amounts of hydrogen sulfide and ammonia after being fully fermented by intestinal bacteria. If they cannot be excreted for a while and accumulate in the intestines, they will cause gastrointestinal bloating. There are several anti-nutritional factors in soy products (including tofu, soy milk, tofu pudding, etc.), two of which are related to the gastrointestinal tract. One is trypsin inhibitor, which is a substance that can inhibit the activity of proteases in the body. If it is consumed too much, it will affect the digestion of protein and stimulate the gastrointestinal tract, causing poisoning symptoms such as nausea and vomiting; the other is flatulence factor, which can cause gastrointestinal flatulence, diarrhea, and indigestion.
