What should I do if the potted osmanthus loses leaves?

Everyone knows that the fragrance of osmanthus is very strong and the color is very beautiful. Osmanthus is not only used for viewing, but also used to make food and is very popular. Many people like to plant osmanthus in their homes, but many people who plant osmanthus have encountered the phenomenon of osmanthus falling leaves, whether it is potted or directly planted. There are many reasons for this phenomenon.

If the leaves of the potted osmanthus fall off due to improper transplanting or management and maintenance, resulting in a large number of or all leaves falling off, and the roots are not supplied with nitrogen, it is easy for the potted osmanthus to stop sprouting and die. Therefore, when osmanthus is planted in the ground or in pots in the north, it is most afraid of being frozen in the cold winter. Once frozen, the osmanthus will lose its leaves and become bare stems, and it will be difficult to grow new buds in the next year. So is it impossible to grow potted osmanthus in the north? Of course you can, just pay attention to the following 3 points.

The indoor potted osmanthus is in bloom. 1. Try to buy osmanthus grafted with the deciduous tree species Tassel Tree as the rootstock. If you know the technology, you can graft it yourself. 2. Apply appropriate amount of nitrogen fertilizer in autumn (you can choose fermented cake fertilizer and nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium ternary compound fertilizer). The purpose of this is to allow 60%-70% of the nitrogen to be absorbed by the roots and stored in the form of storage nitrogen. It will not only provide the germination and growth of leaf buds in the spring of the following year, but also, even if the leaves fall off due to improper management, the plants can still sprout and branch. As long as the fertilizer and water are managed properly, flower bud differentiation and flowering will proceed as usual.

3. Osmanthus is native to Zhejiang. It likes warm and humid climate for growth. It is resistant to high temperature but not cold and likes light. It is a long-day plant. The soil should be moist and well-drained sandy loam. Therefore, when planting osmanthus in pots in the north, special attention should be paid to keeping it warm, such as placing it on a windowsill that has heating and sunlight.

In the non-deciduous season, if the potted osmanthus suddenly loses a large number of leaves, or even all the leaves fall off, there must be a problem with maintenance and management. This situation is usually caused by over-watering. If you water too much and the drainage in the pot is poor, it will easily cause root rot and water will naturally not be able to be transported to the plant. The leaves of osmanthus are constantly evaporating water every day, resulting in insufficient water supply. In this case, on the one hand, the plant is unable to maintain its growth by transporting water and nutrients through the root system's absorption function; on the other hand, the plant evaporates too much water and is not replenished in time, thus entering a state of self-protection, usually reducing nutrient and water consumption by dropping leaves. If the roots are not saved in time, all the leaves may fall off, eventually causing the death of the plant. Obviously, the phenomenon of all the leaves falling off the plant indicates that the situation is already quite serious and there is an immediate risk of death. Therefore, as to whether the osmanthus plant can survive after losing all its leaves, it depends entirely on the condition of the root damage. If the root system of the osmanthus plant, including the main root, is completely rotten, the plant will undoubtedly die, and even strenuous efforts to rescue it will be in vain. But if the main root of the plant is still intact and only a large number of fibrous roots have rotted, then we can still try to save it. And as long as the operation method is correct, it can usually be saved and brought back to life. 1. First, clean the soil adhering to the roots of the plant, then rinse the roots with clean water, and cut off the dead branches and leaves to reduce the consumption of nutrients and water. 2. After cleaning, we will find a large number of rotten fibrous roots. At this time, we need to use sterilized scissors to cut off all rotten roots while ensuring that the main root is intact. 3. After root pruning and branch pruning, a large number of wounds will inevitably be left on the roots and branches. At this time, it is necessary to use drugs such as carbendazim to sterilize and disinfect the wounds in time. 4. The next step is to change the pot and soil, and replant the treated osmanthus tree in the pot. The potting soil should be fertile, loose, breathable and water-permeable sandy loam with a certain water retention capacity. Sprinkle some rooting powder in the pot before use to promote rooting. 5. Soak the soil in the pot before potting. There is no need to water it heavily after potting. Just keep the soil moist. Then place the newly potted plants in a cool and ventilated place.
