Reference table for weight gain during pregnancy

Reference table for weight gain during pregnancy

It is well known that women's weight will increase sharply after pregnancy, and under normal circumstances they will gain 20-30 kilograms. If the weight gain is lower or higher than this value, it is not a healthy sign. At the same time, due to differences in hormones, diet and other aspects in the early, middle and late pregnancy, the extent of the increase also varies. Generally speaking, as long as it is within the range of the pregnancy weight gain reference table, it is normal.

Normal weight gain during pregnancy is an important indicator of good nutrition. Experts say that the ideal total weight gain during pregnancy is 10 to 14 kilograms. Expectant mothers who are underweight before pregnancy can gain more weight during pregnancy; conversely, those who are overweight before pregnancy should be more restrained. All in all, weight gain should be gradual, with an average of about 1 to 2 kg in the first three months and about 0.5 kg per week in the middle and late stages.

The calculation formula for the standard weight gain during pregnancy is:

First, calculate based on your pre-pregnancy weight and height: BMI = weight (kg) / height squared (m), then check the range below based on the calculated value to determine how much weight gain is appropriate for you during the entire pregnancy.

Pre-pregnancy BMI <19.8, total weight gain during pregnancy is preferably 12.5-18 kg;

The pre-pregnancy BMI is between 19.8-26, and the total weight gain during pregnancy is preferably 11.5-16 kg;

The BMI before pregnancy is between 26.1-29.9, and the total weight gain during pregnancy is preferably 7-11.5 kg;

It is normal if the pre-pregnancy BMI is > 30 and the total weight gain during pregnancy is greater than 6 kg.

Or you can make an excel sheet for comparison more intuitively.

Normal weight range for pregnant women:

To determine how much weight you should gain during pregnancy, we need a BMI value.

Pre-pregnancy BMI is the body mass index, which is often used to estimate the standard weight of pregnant women during pregnancy. We can also calculate it ourselves using a simple formula.

BMI index = weight (kg) ÷ height (m)

For example: The BMI of a bird = 50 ÷ (1.6 × 1.6) = 19.5, so the BMI of the bird is 19.5

The pre-pregnancy BMI index of pregnant women is divided into three categories: thin type, standard type, and fat type. Then before pregnancy you will know whether you need to gain weight and how much, and there is a growth range.

BMI before pregnancy:

Thin type: BMI=18.5 and below

It is recommended to gain 12KG-15KG during pregnancy

Due to their physical constitution, thin mothers may not be able to gain the recommended weight during pregnancy. Therefore, when the quantity may be insufficient, it is recommended to improve the quality, eat more high-quality food, and pay attention to a balanced and diverse diet.

Standard: BMI = between 18.5 and 22.9

It is recommended to gain 10KG-14KG during pregnancy

The weight of a standard mother is usually within the standard range. The most common mistake she makes during pregnancy is to eat too much, which causes rapid weight gain. It is recommended that mothers check their weight more often and make adjustments if they find that they are gaining weight quickly.

Obese type: BMI=23 and above

Recommended weight gain during pregnancy: 7KG-10KG

Overweight mothers are overweight during pregnancy and are prone to weight gain, so they should gain less weight during pregnancy. Excessive body fat can affect the baby's development, and regular checks are necessary to prevent pregnancy complications.
