Wide range of uses. Used as solvent for acetylene, aromatic hydrocarbons, sulfur dioxide and other gases, as well as spinning solvent for acrylic fibers. It is an extremely important aprotic polar solvent that is soluble in both water and organic solvents. It has extremely strong permeability to the skin, which helps drugs penetrate into the human body. It can also be used as an additive for pesticides. It is also a very important chemical reagent.

DMSO is also a permeability protectant that can lower the freezing point of cells, reduce the formation of ice crystals, alleviate free radical damage to cells, and change the permeability of biological membranes to electrolytes, drugs, toxins, and metabolites.

DMSO has certain toxic effects. When using it, avoid its volatilization. Prepare 1%-5% ammonia water for use. If it comes into contact with the skin, wash it with plenty of water and dilute ammonia water.

The most common symptoms are nausea, vomiting, rash, and a garlic, onion, and oyster odor on the skin and in breath.

Inhalation: High concentrations may cause headache, dizziness and sedation.

Skin: Can burn and cause stinging sensations on the skin, as seen with rashes and blisters. If dimethyl sulfoxide comes into contact with water-containing skin, it will produce a thermal reaction. Avoid contact with dimethyl sulfoxide solutions containing toxic raw materials or substances because its toxicity is unknown, but dimethyl sulfoxide may penetrate the skin and bring toxic substances into the skin under certain conditions.
