How long does DPT prevent tetanus?

DPT is a combined vaccine that is used to prevent whooping cough, diphtheria and tetanus. The main target group for the DPT vaccine is children. There are many things to pay attention to when administering this vaccine, and different people may have different reactions. Moreover, the duration of DTP prevention is different in different situations. So how long does DTP prevent tetanus?

1. DPT

The pertussis, diphtheria and tetanus mixed vaccine is abbreviated as DTP vaccine. It is made of pertussis vaccine, refined diphtheria and tetanus toxoids in appropriate proportions and is used to prevent pertussis, diphtheria and tetanus.

2. Indications

The vaccine given within 24 hours after the injury is the same as the one given for DPT. Three doses of vaccine given during infancy can provide protection for 3 to 5 years. Adequately immunized individuals have adequate protection against tetanus. If the wound is deep or if the wound is caused by metal buried deep in the soil, a booster shot of vaccine can be given after the wound. Nowadays, hospitals often give tetanus vaccines whenever there is an injury, which is actually an over-precautionary approach. This is because the mortality rate of tetanus is relatively high, especially since the current medical and health management system requires hospitals to bear the burden of proof, and there are generally no adverse reactions to giving an extra shot of tetanus vaccine, so doctors would rather give patients an extra shot to protect themselves. But in fact, it is very rare to be infected with tetanus due to common wounds. Tetanus bacteria can only survive and reproduce in an oxygen-deficient environment. If there are wounds on your hands, as long as they are not too deep, you will generally not be infected with tetanus.

3. Others

Generally, you should not get tetanus after taking the DPT vaccine. But monitoring antibodies varies from person to person. The vaccine given within 24 hours after the injury is the same as the one given for DPT. Three doses of vaccine given during infancy can provide protection for 3 to 5 years. Adequately immunized individuals have adequate protection against tetanus.
