The use of pyroalkali in life

Pyroalkali actually has many uses in daily life. Pyroalkali is also called sodium hydroxide. Sodium hydroxide can be used as an alkaline cleaning agent in water treatment. It is soluble in ethanol and glycerin; insoluble in propanol and ether. It also corrodes sodium carbonate at high temperatures. It undergoes disproportionation reaction with halogens such as chlorine, bromine and iodine. It neutralizes with acids to produce salt and water. It can also be used in papermaking, soap, dyes, rayon, aluminum making, petroleum refining, cotton fabric finishing, purification of coal tar products, as well as food processing, wood processing and machinery industry.

Uses of alkali

1. Ordinary soap is the sodium salt of higher fatty acids, which is generally made by saponifying oils and fats in the presence of a slightly excess of alkali.

2. In the printing and dyeing and textile industries, a large amount of alkaline liquid is used to remove grease from cotton yarn, wool, etc. Alkali is also needed to produce man-made fibers.

3. Alkali is also needed to refine petroleum. In order to remove the colloid in the petroleum fraction, concentrated sulfuric acid is generally added to the petroleum fraction to make the colloid become acid slag and precipitate. After pickling, the petroleum still contains acidic impurities such as phenol, cyclohexane acid and excess sulfuric acid, which must be washed with an alkali solution and then washed with water to obtain refined petroleum products.

4. In the papermaking industry, chemical methods must first be used to process the raw materials containing cellulose and chemical agents to make pulp. The so-called alkaline pulping is to use alkali solution as cooking liquid to remove lignin, carbohydrates, resins, etc. in the raw materials and neutralize the organic acids therein, so as to separate the cellulose.

5. In the metallurgical industry, the effective ingredients in the ore are often converted into soluble sodium salts in order to remove insoluble impurities. Therefore, alkali is often needed to be added.

6. In the chemical industry, alkali is used to produce metallic sodium and electrolyze water. Alkali is used in the production of many inorganic salts, especially in the preparation of some sodium salts. Alkali is also used in the synthesis of dyes, drugs and organic intermediates.

7. Unclog the sewer and clean the range hood. Alkali is a strong alkali that can break down proteins. Under the action of alkali, the hair and other things that are blocking the pipe are decomposed and corroded, and the pipe becomes unblocked.

What are the hazards of pyroalkali

Industrial pyroalkali is extremely harmful to the human body. It is a highly toxic chemical and extremely corrosive. Just consuming 1.95 grams can cause death. If you consume food containing industrial hydrogen peroxide, it will not only strongly irritate the human gastrointestinal tract, but also pose potential hazards such as carcinogenicity, teratogenicity and gene mutation.

Precautions for using pyroalkali

When using alkali solution for disinfection, the following points should be noted:

(1) The bactericidal power of alkali solution often increases with the increase of concentration and temperature, so hot solution is more effective for disinfection.

(2) Adding a small amount of sodium chloride (table salt) to the alkali solution can improve the bactericidal effect.

(3) Since alkaline solution is a strong alkali, attention should be paid to the protection of the disinfection personnel during disinfection to avoid burning people and animals. It is corrosive to textiles and metal instruments, so it is not suitable for disinfecting these items. After using alkaline solution to disinfect livestock and poultry houses and utensils for half a day, they must be rinsed with clean water to avoid burning the hooves or skin of livestock and poultry.
