What does diffuse papules look like

The appearance of papules may be caused by metabolic deposition or the proliferation of skin cells, resulting in bulges on the skin surface. There are many reasons for the appearance of papules, and different types of papules will have different symptoms. Diffuse papules are papules that occur mostly in hairy areas of the human body and have hair running through the center. In addition, what other characteristics does diffuse papules have?

Papules are localized protrusions above the skin, which may be as small as a needle tip or as large as a soybean. They may be elevated or flat, smooth or wart-like in structure, or have pigmentation the same as the surrounding skin (those with a diameter of more than 1 cm are called plaques). Many skin diseases begin with lesions from papules and should be closely observed and diagnosed.

It is common in hairy areas such as the scalp, back of the neck, limbs and vulva (more common in adult males). It initially appears as millet-sized inflammatory papules with hair running through the center. It is bright red or dark red in color with a red halo around it. After a few days, pustules are formed with thin blister walls and a small amount of purulent secretions after breaking. Slight pain or itching. After the pustule bursts, a yellow-brown scab is formed, which can heal in about 7 days, or it may not heal for a long time and may recur repeatedly.

It could be folliculitis

A polymorphic rash that occurs anywhere on the body, manifested as small papules and papulovesicles with symmetrical distribution, unclear edges, and a pronounced tendency to exudate, erosion, crusting, and scaling, sometimes accompanied by infiltration and hypertrophy, severe itching, frequent recurrences, and a chronic course.

It could be eczema

It is common in areas with more sebaceous glands such as the scalp, face, upper chest, upper back, armpits, and genitals. The basic lesions are erythema, papules, and yellow greasy scales or scabs on the surface, with varying degrees of itching; the distribution is symmetrical, and can cause thinning and loss of hair.

It could be seborrheic dermatitis

It is prone to occur in areas prone to friction (more common in young or middle-aged people) such as the neck, extensor side of the elbow joint, sacrum, and around the eyes (especially the upper eyelids). The local skin first has severe itching, and due to repeated scratching, triangular or polygonal, skin-colored or light brown flat papules consistent with the skin texture may appear. The rash is dry without exudation, the surface is dry, and it feels firm. It can be densely packed into pieces, forming lichen-like plaques, and there may be scratches, blood scabs and pigmentation on the surface.

It may be neurodermatitis

It is more common in young men and women (women develop the disease earlier than men, and men have more severe symptoms than women), and is prone to occur in areas of the face, chest and back where sebaceous glands are abundant. There are two types: whiteheads and blackheads. When squeezed with hands, milky white sebum plugs can be seen being squeezed out. Follicular inflammatory papules are often caused by bacterial infection. There are pustules on the top of the papules, and punctate atrophic scars are left after healing. If the inflammation is severe, deep, pea-sized, dark red, hard nodules with porous blackheads, multiple penetrating abscesses, sinus tracts, nodules, cysts, and hypertrophic scars may be seen.
