What are the symptoms of a sprained or fractured ankle

Sprained ankle is quite common, especially for women who like to wear high heels. After spraining your ankle, you must go to the hospital for treatment first. You cannot relieve it at will, otherwise it will seriously affect the future activities of your foot. What are the symptoms of a sprained ankle and a fracture? The symptoms of a fracture are also quite obvious, but the symptoms vary depending on the situation.

Same sprain, big difference

Do spraining your ankle while walking and exercising cause the same injuries? An old lady and a young man sprained their ankle while going down the stairs; the injuries suffered by different people in the same situation may vary greatly. Therefore, we cannot judge others based on their circumstances or our own circumstances when we were young. "For example, the same person can run and jump faster than walking, with greater momentum, and the injury will be more serious. If an athlete and an old lady who is not active often twist their ankle while going down the stairs, the athlete may rest, put on a plaster and move around as usual; but the old lady may have a 'fracture' and stay in bed for months without recovery."

If you sprain your ankle at a slow speed and your foot is not swollen or painful, then it is probably just a soft tissue sprain and the ligaments are not damaged. However, if you sprain your ankle while running or jumping, and your foot immediately swells up and it hurts so much that you can't stand or walk, then you may have sprained your ligament. The injury is more serious and needs to be taken seriously. It is recommended that you go to the hospital for diagnosis and treatment.

Acute injury, B-ultrasound examination of ligaments is recommended

It is worth noting that ligament injuries will have some sequelae - for some people, after a period of delay, the injured area may not be very painful and they may be able to walk slowly again. But you may feel your feet go weak when walking on uneven surfaces, and you may sprain your feet once or twice a year. In fact, this situation is a secondary manifestation of ligament injury - ankle instability. If not treated promptly, the ligaments and articular cartilage around the ankle joint will wear and degenerate quickly. Just like if a machine's belt becomes loose and is not corrected, problems may soon arise with the bearings and engine.

If it is an acute injury, it is recommended to go to the hospital for ultrasound or MR examination. B-ultrasound is a better method for diagnosing ligament or soft tissue injuries. If you have sprained your ankle before and now have ankle instability, you can also go to the hospital for an X-ray diagnosis. This is a simple and easy test to diagnose chronic ankle instability. If you find that the affected foot is more likely to turn inward than the healthy foot or be moved forward like a drawer (with the lower leg fixed), the lateral ankle ligament may have been ruptured. Similarly, this method can also be used to determine whether the medial ligament is damaged.
