Sialic acid (SA) is an acetylated derivative of neuraminic acid and an important component of cell membrane glycoproteins and glycolipids. It is located at the terminal position of the sugar chain of ganglioside and exists in various tissues.

There are three main forms of sialic acid in the body: glycoprotein-bound sialic acid, lipoprotein-bound sialic acid and free sialic acid.

During normal metabolism, the serum sialic acid content is stable.
