This poison is actually the carnivorous bacteria inside the crabs.

Is it poisonous if a crab pricks your hand?

1. The wound caused by seafood may be red, swollen, hot and painful, which are symptoms of inflammation. However, if the wound feels unusually painful, it may be a symptom of flesh-eating bacteria and you need to go to the hospital for treatment immediately. If you get prompt medical treatment, antibiotics can kill the flesh-eating bacteria, but any delay can make the condition worse, and even if you survive, you may need limb amputation.

2. Flesh-eating bacteria, also known as flesh-eating bacteria, are not a single bacterium, but refer to a mixture of pathogens that can cause "necrotizing fasciitis". The most common pathogens are Streptococcus pyogenes and Vibrio vulnificus. Other pathogens include Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, etc. Because these bacteria infect the fascia under the skin and cause inflammation, the clinical course is rapid and severe, and the mortality rate is high, so they are named "flesh-eating bacteria".

3. "Flesh-eating bacteria can infect any part of the fascia. Patients must be hospitalized as soon as possible to remove necrotic tissue and take antibiotics. Otherwise, sepsis and multiple organ failure may occur, which can be fatal within 24 hours. Flesh-eating bacteria can enter the human body through some very small wounds on the skin, and its toxicity is so strong that people with poor resistance cannot resist it at all.

How to deal with seafood injuries

People with poor immunity need to prevent marine Vibrio infection

People with different physiques react differently to pathogenic bacteria in seafood and river fish. Fan Zhihong said that people with high uric acid in the blood, gout problems, damaged liver and kidney function, digestive system diseases, and allergies should not consume large amounts of seafood and river fish. According to the recommendations of the Chinese Nutrition Society, it is appropriate to eat 75-100 grams a day. Zhang Ling also said that high-risk groups such as those with poor immunity should pay special attention to prevent infections such as marine Vibrio. People with the following diseases are more likely to develop serious infections after infection with Vibrio marinum, including alcoholic cirrhosis, pre-existing liver disease (including cirrhosis of unknown cause) and chronic hepatitis. In addition, alcoholics, people with hereditary hemochromatosis (iron deposition) and citizens suffering from chronic diseases including diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, thalassemia, chronic renal failure, lymphoma, etc. should also be cautious about Vibrio virulence infection.

Avoid exposing skin wounds and cook thoroughly before eating

Regarding how to prevent infection from fungi such as Vibrio viridae, Zhang Ling said that we can take two targeted measures. First, try to eat less raw and cold food. When eating seafood, try to steam and cook it thoroughly. When steaming or boiling shellfish, they should be boiled for at least 5-7 minutes. In addition, please note that if you have wounds on your skin, try to avoid exposing the wounds to sea water. Fan Zhihong pointed out that when eating seafood and other products, cooking them can reduce the chance of infection with similar bacteria, because most live bacteria are not heat-resistant and most of them can be killed by heating to 80-90℃.
