Is it normal to urinate frequently in winter?

Frequent urination is the most common phenomenon in winter. Many people feel very confused. Even if they drink a little water, they still have to go to the toilet constantly. Some people will experience frequent urination when the weather gets cold. This situation is very common in life. However, if the urination is too frequent, it may be caused by a physical illness. It is best to go to the hospital for relevant examinations and then actively receive treatment.

Is frequent urination normal in winter?

Frequent urination refers to an increase in the number of urinations per unit time. A normal adult urinates an average of 4 to 6 times a day during the day and 0 to 2 times at night after going to bed. It is normal to urinate more after drinking water. If the frequency of urination increases significantly and exceeds the above range while you are eating and drinking normally during the day, it is called frequent urination. The temperature will have a certain impact on urination. When it is hot, due to sweating, the urination frequency is relatively less; when the weather is cold, the evaporation of the skin is reduced, and the body fluids are mainly excreted through the kidneys in the form of urine, so the urine will be more in cold weather. If there are no other discomfort symptoms, then it is considered a normal phenomenon. However, if the frequency of urination obviously exceeds the above normal range after the weather turns cold, or is accompanied by urgency, discomfort or pain during urination, it may be an abnormal change such as urinary tract infection, and necessary examinations should be carried out to rule out pathological conditions.

Winter frequent urination symptoms

1. Kidney disease: Due to decreased renal function, the body cannot excrete toxic substances after metabolism during the day and needs to continue excreting at night, resulting in frequent urination at night. Also known as renal insufficiency or nocturnal compensatory polyuria.

2. Heart disease: When there is water retention in the body, especially when there is heart failure, when lying down at night, the amount of blood returning to the heart increases, the blood flow to the kidneys increases accordingly, and the number of nocturia increases. It is mainly seen in various heart diseases accompanied by heart failure.

3. Neuropsychiatric factors: Some people suffer from insomnia or neuropsychiatric factors, which increase urination at night, mainly with frequent nocturia but little urine volume.

4. Urethritis: If accompanied by difficulty urinating, it may be caused by cystitis, prostatitis, or urethritis. Urethritis is a common disease that refers to inflammation of the urethral mucosa, which is more common in women. Clinically, it can be divided into acute and chronic, nonspecific urethritis and gonococcal urethritis. The latter two have similar clinical manifestations and must be differentiated based on medical history and bacteriological examination. It is mostly caused by retrograde invasion of pathogenic bacteria into the urethra.

Why do I urinate frequently in winter?

The normal daily urine output of an adult is between 1000 and 2000 ml. Exceeding 2500 ml is considered polyuria. The average number of urinations during the day is 4 to 6 times, and 0 to 2 times after going to bed at night. Any number exceeding the above is generally considered frequent urination. Winter polyuria should be considered first. If the human body drinks the same amount of water, it can excrete water through sweat evaporation and urination in the summer. In the winter, sweat evaporation decreases and urine volume increases accordingly. When it is cold, it may also stimulate the nerve center, causing changes in the regulation of the endocrine system and increasing urine output. If persistent polyuria occurs, diseases caused by secretory metabolic disorders should be considered, including pituitary diabetes insipidus, diabetes, primary aldosteronism, etc. In addition, if frequent urination is accompanied by pain and urgency, inflammatory irritation such as cystitis and urethritis or urinary stones should be considered.

Causes of frequent urination in winter

1. Disease reasons:

Disease is a common cause of frequent urination in winter. If frequent urination occurs at night, you should be careful to rule out kidney disease, heart disease, neuropsychiatric factors, urethritis and other diseases. If persistent polyuria occurs, diseases caused by secretory metabolic disorders should be considered, including pituitary diabetes insipidus, diabetes, primary aldosteronism, or inflammatory irritation such as cystitis, urethritis, or urinary tract stones, which need to be combined with other symptoms.

2. Non-disease factors:

In addition to disease factors, frequent urination caused by non-disease factors should not be ignored. If you drink a lot of water or are on diuretic treatment, and your daily water intake includes water from drinking water, fruits, and diet, and your output is mainly urine, if the input and output are balanced, or the output decreases as the input decreases, then it has little to do with physical disease factors, and the frequent urination is more caused by physiological factors.
