Some patients are unable to move around, so urine must be discharged from their bodies through a urinary catheter. Inserting a urinary catheter may seem to have no direct impact on the body, but if you do not pay attention to cleaning, it will still leave sequelae. During the insertion of the catheter, sterile operation must be performed, urine must be released in time, and the urethra must be scrubbed to avoid infection. This is the only way to effectively avoid the occurrence of sequelae. Sequelae of urinary catheterization A urinary catheter is a tube made of natural rubber, silicone rubber or polyvinyl chloride (PVC) that can be inserted into the bladder through the urethra to drain urine. After the catheter is inserted into the bladder, there is an air bag near the tip of the catheter to fix the catheter in the bladder and prevent it from falling out. The drainage tube is connected to a urine bag to collect urine. The sequelae of catheterization include urethral infection and inflammation. Long-term catheterization may cause urethral stenosis in men. Steps for catheterization Place the bedpan between the patient's buttocks and manually spread the labia majora or retract the foreskin. Wet a cotton swab with saline or boiled water and clean the catheter about one inch near the end of the catheter. Use one cotton swab at a time and throw the dirty cotton swab into the prepared plastic container. Check for any crusting or unusual drainage or discharge. Observe and record urine color, quantity and properties (1) Normal: 1500-2000 ml/24h Polyuria > 2500 ml/24h Oliguria < 400 ml/24h No urine < 50 ml/24h (2) Color: Normal: colorless, transparent or light yellow; Abnormal: hematuria, hemoglobinuria, bilirubinuria, chyluria Clamp the catheter daily and loosen it every 3-4 hours. If the catheter is inserted too shallowly, part of the airbag will be close to the posterior urethra, which may cause urethral bleeding. Therefore, after the urine enters 4-5cm, inflate or inject water into the catheter and then gently pull it outward until it stops. At this time, the airbag is just at the inner opening of the urethra, which can effectively prevent urethral bleeding or exudation. Generally, a catheter needs to be inserted before the operation. It is inserted from the urethral opening, which is above the vaginal opening. You will feel a little pain during insertion, but it is not painful. The catheter is elastic and the urethra is also elastic, so there is no need to be too nervous. Generally, it will be discharged 24 hours after the operation. You are encouraged to get out of bed to urinate. If you still cannot urinate by then, you may be inserted again. |
