Propionibacterium is the culprit of acne!

Acne, also known as blackheads, is a very common skin disease. Many people will be seriously troubled by acne, especially women who love beauty. Facial acne is very common and not easy to cure. Do you know the causes of acne? In fact, the formation of acne is closely related to Propionibacterium. The imbalance of Propionibacterium on the skin surface can easily cause acne.

Acne is the most common skin disease. Every year, more than 50 million people in the United States cannot get rid of the nightmare of acne. In a new study, researchers have updated their understanding of what causes acne, which could lead to improved treatments for the disease. Researchers from the University of California, Los Angeles say the occurrence of acne is likely related to a certain strain of bacteria.

In this study, scientists found that an imbalance of a certain type of bacteria on the skin's surface affects the development of acne, a chronic inflammatory skin disease that manifests as papules, blackheads, whiteheads, nodules, cysts, and other types of pimples. It starts as acne, which includes two types: whiteheads and blackheads, which contain keratin and sebum. Whiteheads are also known as closed comedones. The areas of the body most affected by acne are the face, neck, chest, shoulders and back. This is because these areas have a lot of sebaceous glands. These glands in the skin follicles produce sebum, an oily substance that lubricates the hair and skin. Sometimes, excess sebum can clog pores, creating an ideal environment for bacteria to thrive, leading to inflammation and the development of acne.

The bacteria Propionibacterium is the main culprit in the development of acne. Studies have found that Propionibacterium uses oil as an energy source, and its presence can cause inflammation. However, people without acne also have a large number of Propionibacterium. Why is this?

In this study, researchers tried to find out the role of various bacteria in acne. The team recruited 72 adult volunteers, 38 of whom had acne and the other 34 did not. After using an over-the-counter product to clean their pores, the researchers took samples of their hair follicles. Next, they looked at the makeup of each person's skin microbiome.

When comparing participants with acne and those without, the researchers found different strains of Propionibacterium. Participants without acne had abundant metabolism-related bacteria in their Propionibacterium, which can keep harmful bacteria on the surface of the skin away. However, participants with acne had a large number of toxicity-related genes in their Propionibacterium, which promotes inflammation and unhealthy skin.

By simply identifying the differences in Propionibacterium in the skin, the presence of acne can be predicted. The head of the research team said: "This study shows that differences in bacteria in hair follicles determine the formation of acne or other skin problems on the skin."
