What are the symptoms of histrionic personality disorder?

Nowadays, most personality disorders are caused by mental and psychological factors. For example, if a person has been exposed to too much stimulation when he is young, coupled with poor psychological endurance, these will lead to personality disorders. Personality disorders can be divided into many types, including histrionic personality disorder, which is more common in the general population. Patients will fantasize, attract other people's attention, and often have mood swings and high self-admiration.

Clinical manifestations

Histrionic personality disorder is one of the most common personality disorders, with a prevalence of approximately 2% in the general population and an incidence rate in women that is approximately twice that of men.

The manifestations of histrionic personality disorder are generally as follows:

(1) Attract attention and have dramatic emotions. This type of people often like to express themselves and have good artistic expression skills. They can sing, speak, cry and laugh. Their acting skills are realistic and have a certain appeal. Some people call them great imitators and performers. They often behave in an overly artificial and exaggerated manner, even posturing, to attract attention.

(2) Highly suggestive and fantasy-like. This type of people not only have a strong tendency to self-suggest, but also have a strong tendency to be suggested by others. They often like to fantasize and take their imagination as reality. When there is a lack of sufficient real stimulation, they use fantasy to stimulate their inner emotional experience.

(3) Acting on emotion. This type of people are emotionally rich, passionate but lack stability; their emotions are passionate but not deep, so their emotions are changeable and their passions are easily unbalanced. There may be emotional reactions to slight stimuli, fussing, lack of inherent mood, and emotional activities are almost all reactive. Because of excessive emotional reactions, people often give people the impression of being superficial, lacking true feelings, being pretentious, or even whining.

(4) Viewing manipulating others as a means to achieve one’s own goals. Use a variety of tactics to get people to submit, such as willfulness, force, lying and deceiving, flattery, and sometimes even manipulative threats of suicide. Their interpersonal relationships are superficial. On the surface, they appear warm, intelligent, and attractive, but in fact they completely ignore the needs and interests of others.

(5) Highly self-centered. This type of people likes attention and praise from others. They will only be happy when they are catered to and pleased by others. Otherwise, they will attack others without any reservations. In addition, such patients also have immature sexual psychological development, manifested as sexual indifference or sexual oversensitivity. Female patients often display their sexiness naively, and use overly shy temptations to seduce others unconsciously.

Generally speaking, people with histrionic personality disorder do not pay attention to details or facts, and they are unwilling or unable to make rational judgments and analyze problems and situations. Patients often present with complaints of depression, unexplained graphic problems, and a disappointing romantic relationship.
