What should I pay attention to during the treatment of lower leg fracture

Compared with the thigh bone, the calf bone is weaker. If you encounter unexpected factors in your daily life, it is easy to cause a calf fracture. If a fracture occurs, you should go to the hospital for an X-ray examination in time, and then receive symptomatic treatment based on the examination results. During the fracture period, you should pay more attention to physical conditioning, eat more foods containing calcium, and after a period of recovery, you should perform functional training.

First: Need to pass X-ray

Determine whether there is a fracture, as well as the location and severity of the fracture. CT or MRI examinations may be required if necessary;

Second: Determine the next treatment method

If the fracture is in a single part and the displacement is not obvious, conservative treatment can be considered, usually manual reduction and plaster fixation. If the displacement is obvious or it is an open fracture or multiple fractures throughout the body, surgical treatment is generally required;

Third: Precautions for conservative or surgical fractures:

Conservative treatment requires close observation of limb swelling. Generally, the swelling will increase in the first three days after injury and then gradually subside. Conservative treatment has the risk of displacement, which usually occurs about 1-2 weeks after the fracture is fixed with plaster. Therefore, conservative treatment requires weekly X-rays to understand the fracture location during the first two weeks of plaster fixation. Regarding surgery, the best time for surgery is generally one week after a closed fracture. Postoperatively, the main things to pay attention to are the wound and swelling. The swelling also gradually increases in the first three days, and then gradually disappears. It usually takes one to two weeks to disappear. The stitches on the wound and limbs need to be removed two weeks after surgery.

Fourth: Follow-up examination and functional training

Generally, it takes about 3 months for a fracture to heal, but the healing time varies depending on the location and fracture situation. The slowest healing part is the calf, which usually takes more than half a year. The time of plaster fixation is related to the part of the body. The time for each part is different, so you need to listen to the advice of an orthopedic surgeon. Follow-up examination is very important. Generally, X-rays need to be checked once every month to one and a half months after fracture treatment to understand the fracture healing status. Weight bearing is prohibited before the fracture heals. Active functional exercise is the guarantee for restoring good function. The exercise methods for different parts are different, so you need to consult an orthopedic doctor in time.

Fifth: About diet and calcium supplementation

Generally speaking, as long as you are not an elderly person or a patient with osteoporosis who has a fracture, you do not need to supplement calcium. You can just eat more bone soup and meat.
