What are the more obvious symptoms of cheilitis

Cheilitis is a common disease of the lip skin, and many people hate it because it can cause dryness and chapped lips, making the skin of the lips very uncomfortable. Common symptoms of cheilitis include dryness and chapped skin, but if it is severe, there may also be erosion and yellow liquid exudation.

1. Symptoms include dryness, scaling and cracking of the red part of the lips. Severe symptoms include lip swelling and erosion, inflammatory exudate, formation of blood or pus scabs, obvious pain, and a burning sensation. Severe patients will experience symptoms such as high fever, muscle and joint pain, headache, cough, and erythematous blisters all over the body. After the blisters rupture, large areas of skin will fall off, which is called "toxic epidermal necrolysis."

2. Photosensitivity cheilitis is more common on the lower lip, with erosion of the lip vermilion, light yellow exudate not exceeding the edge of the lip vermilion, mild swelling of the lips, and lip eversion. In severe cases, the swelling is obvious and there is bleeding or ulceration, and blood scabs are formed. After the scab is removed, a bleeding wound surface is exposed, or there is pus and blood. Local burning, pain, dryness, and itching. The pain is aggravated by friction, and lip movement is restricted. The disease is difficult to cure and can last for several months or longer. The submandibular lymph nodes are swollen and there is local pigmentation. The symptoms of benign lymphoproliferative cheilitis are similar to those of photosensitive cheilitis, with erosion, ulcers, pus and blood crusts, desquamation, chapped skin, pain, swelling, etc. In addition, short white stripes may appear on the red edge of the lips and near the mucous membrane, which is similar to discoid lupus erythematosus, but the lesions do not exceed the red edge of the lips, and there is no rash. The erosive type of lichen planus has a smaller range of lip erosions, and there must be white patterns around it. Erythema multiforme exudative has an acute onset and is more common in young people. It is characterized by erosion, bleeding, and blood crusts. In addition, for lip ulcers that do not heal for a long time, whose area suddenly increases in a short period of time, and whose pain is not severe, the possibility of lip cancer should be ruled out.

Types of cheilitis

Cheilitis can be clinically divided into several types, including actinic cheilitis, exfoliative cheilitis, glandular cheilitis, granulomatous cheilitis, etc. These types of chronic cheilitis all have relatively long-lasting symptoms such as swelling, erosion, desquamation, exudation, and in some cases may be accompanied by pain or itching.

1. Actinic cheilitis

The main feature is erosion of the red part of the lower lip, with varying degrees of swelling of the lips. In mild cases, there is light yellow exudate and the skin is lighter in color; in severe cases, ulcers are formed, bleeding and blood sclerosis are formed. The condition may be mild or severe and may last for a long time. Several days or longer. Patients often feel local burning, pain, dryness, and lip movement is affected.

2. Exfoliative cheilitis

The main symptom of this type of cheilitis is dryness and desquamation of the red part of the lips, which may sometimes be accompanied by longitudinal fissures. If the fissures are deep, they may bleed and form hemorrhoids. Because patients feel dry and painful lips, they often lick their lips with their tongue to moisten them, but the licking makes the condition worse.

3. Glandular cheilitis

It is caused by hypertrophy and swelling of the mucous glands in the lips. Patients often experience local swelling and numbness. When you turn over the swollen lips, you can see that the opening of the mucous gland duct on the inner side of the lips is slightly red, and thin or purulent mucus oozes out of the duct opening in the shape of small water droplets.
