Therefore, mucus in the stool may also be related to enteritis.

3. Mucus in the stool may also be caused by intestinal polyps. The small raised lumps of flesh in the intestines are what we call rectal polyps or colon polyps. Because the polyps are raised, they can easily be scratched during defecation, causing blood in the stool, and may become cancerous after infection. In order to eliminate this "foreign body", the intestines have to secrete mucus, but the effect is often not ideal.
