Is myopia hereditary?

Is myopia hereditary?

What everyone needs to understand is that myopia is hereditary, and there is a 40% chance of inheritance of myopia, especially severe myopia. For example, if a man with severe myopia marries a woman with severe myopia, then more than 90% of the children born to such a couple will suffer from myopia.

1. 40% of myopia is mainly inherited. The inheritance of myopia is mainly the inheritance of high myopia. High myopia can be divided into two types: physiological and pathological. If it is pathological myopia, there is a possibility that the baby's eyes will develop myopia because it carries a specific family hereditary trait. There is this probability. It is not necessarily the case that the children of parents with high myopia will also have high myopia. This is not the case, but there is a probability involved. The point I want to emphasize is that it must be pathological high myopia. If it is physiological myopia of 600 degrees or even 1000 degrees, it will not be inherited, that is, it will not necessarily be inherited. Pathological myopia has genetic factors, while physiological myopia does not have genetic factors.

2. High myopia is an autosomal recessive genetic disease, which means that the disease will only occur when both genes related to myopia are pathogenic genes. If only one of the genes is pathogenic and the other gene is normal, the person will not develop the disease and will be a carrier of the pathogenic gene. For example, neither parent is nearsighted, but they are both carriers of high myopia genes. They themselves do not show myopia, but their disease-causing genes are passed on to their children, making the children have two myopia genes, thus making the children nearsighted.

3. When a man with severe myopia marries a woman with severe myopia (over 600 degrees), the chance of their children developing the disease is over 90%. If a couple marries a myopia gene carrier, half of their children may be severely myopic. However, if they marry a couple with normal vision or moderate to low myopia, the chance of their children developing myopia is 1/10.

4. If it is physiological high myopia formed after birth, it will not have a big impact on the child's eye health. If you want your baby's eyes to develop healthily, you must pay attention to the child's eye hygiene after the child is born. For example, do not let the child observe things at a close distance for too long, including close-up videos, or do some delicate work such as calligraphy, drawing and practicing calligraphy, etc. This can reduce the possibility of myopia in children.
