What medicine should I take if my low-density lipoprotein cholesterol is too high

During routine checkups, if you find that your low-density lipoprotein cholesterol is high, what should you do? Low-density lipoprotein cholesterol is actually a relatively unhealthy type of cholesterol in the human body. If this type of cholesterol rises, it will affect the cardiovascular system and in severe cases can lead to arteriosclerosis, thrombosis, etc. So how should high low-density lipoprotein cholesterol be treated and what medicine is better?

1. How high is the LDL cholesterol level that requires medication?

A plasma total cholesterol concentration >5.17mmol/L (200mg/dl) is considered hypercholesterolemia, and a plasma triglyceride concentration >2.3mmol/L (200mg/dl) is considered hypertriglyceridemia. The new standard recommends starting drug treatment when the LDL-C (low-density lipoprotein cholesterol) concentration is >130 mg/dl, with an LDL-C concentration of <100 mg/dl as the treatment target. If the risk of future cardiovascular and cerebrovascular disease is very high, drug treatment should be started earlier and more stringent treatment targets should be adopted. A low HDL-C (high-density lipoprotein cholesterol) concentration of <40 mg/dl is a risk factor for coronary heart disease.

2. What medicine should I take for high LDL cholesterol?

One type is statins, such as nefastatin, lovastatin, etc., which are mainly used to lower cholesterol. The other type is fibrates, which are mainly used to lower triglycerides. When taking the medicine, pay attention to check liver and kidney function for three months. If there is no abnormality, it can be used for a long time.

How to Lower LDL Cholesterol

1. Lower bad cholesterol through a balanced diet and limit the intake of saturated fat. The easiest way to reduce your saturated fat intake is to avoid processed foods and eat more fruits, vegetables, and whole grains.

2. Increase your daily intake of soluble fiber. Fruits, vegetables, and whole grains are rich in fiber. These foods help the body excrete cholesterol through bowel movements, preventing it from being reabsorbed by the body.

Choose foods that contain healthy fats. Fish, seeds, avocados and nuts all contain fats that are good for your body. Our bodies do need some fat, but it is best to consume polyunsaturated fats. [5] It should be noted that a moderate amount of nuts is good for the body, but consuming large amounts is not.
