Prognosis issues of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy

The earlier hypertrophic cardiomyopathy occurs, the worse the prognosis. We all know that the biggest problem with this disease may cause sudden death in patients, especially among adolescents or young patients. Sudden death is common. Therefore, changes in clinical manifestations and natural history are actually related to age.

1. The natural history of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy is highly variable. The earlier the onset, the worse the prognosis. The main problem is sudden death. Sudden death is often the most likely to occur in adolescents or young patients.

2. Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy has a slow onset and a relatively good prognosis. Most patients can survive for a long time, but sudden death can occur at any stage of the disease. The causes of death were ventricular tachycardia, heart failure, embolism and infective endocarditis.

3. The natural history of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy is highly variable. The earlier the onset, the worse the prognosis. The main problem is sudden death. In adolescents or young patients, sudden death is often the first symptom. Among hospitalized patients, the incidence of sudden death is 2% to 6% per year; if all patients with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy are considered, the annual mortality rate is approximately 1%. The disease progresses slowly and may be asymptomatic for many years. Most patients can survive for a long time, but sudden death can occur at any stage of the disease. The annual mortality rate is about 3.5%.

4. Changes in the clinical manifestations and natural history of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy are related to age. The prognosis for children is poor. Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy has a certain sudden death rate. Statistics from several centers show that the annual mortality rate of patients with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy is 2% to 4%, and in children it is as high as 6%, and sudden death accounts for 50% of deaths among patients.
