What should I do if my nose is dry and painful? What is the reason?

If you find that your nose becomes dry and painful for a long time due to shaking your head or hitting your nose, then you need to start paying attention to your nasal problems. It is recommended that you visit a nasal specialist to check if there is any problem. Long-term dry and painful nose or dry and painful nose for no reason is mostly caused by pathological problems of the nose, so it should be treated with caution.

1. What to do if your nose is dry and painful

1. Systemic treatment

Drink plenty of water, eat a light diet, and have a smooth bowel movement. Those with severe symptoms should rest in bed.

1) Early use of sweating therapy can alleviate symptoms and shorten the course of the disease. For example, ① boil ginger, brown sugar and scallion in water and drink it hot. ② Antipyretic and analgesic drugs: 1 tablet of compound aspirin, 3 times/day, or 0.3-0.5g of aspirin, 3 times/day, or 1 tablet of Contac, 2 times/day.

2) Chinese patent medicine: 1-2 capsules of quick-acting cold capsules, 3 times/day or 1-2 capsules of cold medicine, 3 times/day. You can also use Yinqiao tablets, etc.

3) When there is concurrent bacterial infection or suspected complications, systemic antibiotics should be used for treatment.

4) You can use external acupoint patches such as the Chinese medicine Li's Medicinal Patch.

2. Local treatment

1) Vasoconstrictor nasal drops can reduce mucosal swelling, relieve nasal congestion, and improve drainage, such as 1% for children, 0.5% for children, and ephedrine in normal saline. Nasal drop method: ① Supine method: Lie on your back with a pillow under your shoulders; or lie on your back with your head tilted back and hanging over the edge of the bed, with the front nostrils facing upwards. ② Sitting method: Sit with your back against the chair and your head tilted back as far as possible. ③ Side-lying method: Lie on the affected side with your head down. This method is suitable for patients with unilateral sinusitis or hypertension. After the body position is determined, drip the medicine into the nasal cavity through the anterior nostril, 3-5 drops on each side.

2) Acupuncture at the Yingxiang and Bitong points, or massage of the aforementioned points, can relieve nasal congestion. In addition, the correct method of blowing the nose should be promoted: press one nostril tightly and gently blow out the mucus from the opposite nasal cavity; or inhale the mucus into the pharynx and then spit it out.

3) Nasal wash method: Add 4.5 grams of non-iodized salt to 500 ml of warm water, pour into a nasal wash pot to rinse the nasal cavity.

2. Causes of dry and painful nose

There are generally two reasons for pain in the nose. The first one is rhinorrhoea. Rhinorrhea is one of the common symptoms of nasal diseases. For different reasons. The nature of the secretions also varies, as described below:

(1) Purulent rhinorrhea: seen in more severe sinusitis

(2) Watery rhinorrhoea

The secretions are thin, transparent and watery, and are more common in the early stages of acute rhinitis and during attacks of allergic rhinitis.

(3) Mucopurulent rhinorrhea

It is seen in the recovery period of acute rhinitis, chronic rhinitis and sinusitis, etc. The secretion is viscous, and its main components are desquamated mucosal epithelial cells and infiltrating polymorphonuclear leukocytes.

(4) Mucous rhinorrhea

The mucous glands of the nasal mucosa and the goblet cells of the epithelium secrete mucous substances. Keeps nasal mucosa moisturized. When the nasal mucosa is chronically inflamed, the above-mentioned mucous glands and goblet cells secrete excessively. Mucous rhinorrhea occurs.

(5) Cerebrospinal fluid rhinorrhea

(That is, cerebrospinal fluid flows out of the nasal cavity, which is seen in congenital cribriform plate, sphenoid sinus bone defects and anterior cranial fossa, middle cranial fossa floor fractures or surgical trauma. Endoscopic nasal surgery that damages the bone at the attachment of the middle turbinate (such as the ethmoid roof) can easily cause cerebrospinal fluid rhinorrhea.

(6) Bloody rhinorrhea

That is, the secretions contain blood, which is seen in nasal and sinus inflammation, trauma, foreign bodies, stones, tumors (such as maxillary sinus malignant tumors), etc. If there is bloody rhinorrhea, the nose and sinuses should be examined, and a full-body examination should be done if necessary to determine the cause and location of the bleeding.
