What are the clinical manifestations of nasal septum granuloma

The nasal septum is an important structural tissue in our nose. If granuloma occurs in the nasal septum, the patient should feel discomfort in the nose. Generally, patients with nasal septum granuloma will experience symptoms such as nasal obstruction and bloody secretions.

This disease is more common in middle-aged and young people, with a male-to-female ratio of 2.7 to 4:1. The average age of onset is about 40 years old, and it is also seen in young people and children. The course of this disease is short and the clinical progression is rapid. Stewart divided the clinical manifestations of malignant granuloma into three stages:

1. Prologue

It is a common symptom of cold or sinusitis, with intermittent nasal obstruction, accompanied by watery or bloody secretions, and may also be manifested as dry and crusted nose. Local examination generally shows inflammation, and granulomatous ulcers may appear on the nasal septum. This period can last 4 to 6 weeks.

2.Activity period

The nose is poorly ventilated or completely blocked, with purulent discharge, often with a foul odor. The general condition is still good, with sweating, poor appetite, often low fever, and a few with high fever. General antibiotics are ineffective. Local examination revealed that the nasal mucosa was swollen, eroded and even ulcerated, in a granuloma-like state, with grayish-white necrosis on the surface. It often affects the inferior turbinate or nasal septum first. In severe cases, it can cause external swelling of the nose. Progression of the disease can cause nasal septum perforation or palate perforation. This period can last from several weeks to several months.

3. Terminal stage

The patient is debilitated, cachectic, and partially disfigured. The nasal mucosa, cartilage, bone and surrounding tissues may be severely and extensively damaged, the eyelids and conjunctiva may swell, the eyeballs may bulge, the vision may decrease, and eventually death may occur from exhaustion, hemorrhage or meningitis.
