Can I do a gastroscopy after drinking water? What should I pay attention to during a gastroscopy?

Gastroscopy is an examination that people often undergo during physical examinations, but many people are still not sure whether they can do a gastroscopy after drinking water. In fact, there are 5 points to note before gastroscopy. The first point is that you must be fasting for at least 6 hours, so you cannot do gastroscopy after drinking water.

Things to note during gastroscopy

1. The patient must fast for at least 6 hours before the examination. If the examination is conducted in the morning, the patient must fast after dinner the day before and skip dinner on the day of the examination. If the examination is conducted in the afternoon, the patient can have a light semi-liquid breakfast and must fast at noon. Patients with severe illness or weak constitution may have difficulty supporting themselves after fasting, and hypertonic glucose solution should be injected intravenously before examination.

2. In order to eliminate the patient's tension, reduce gastric juice secretion and gastric motility, remove gastric foam, and make the image clearer, the doctor should give the patient sedatives, antispasmodics and defoaming agents 20-30 minutes before the examination if necessary. Patients should understand this and cooperate with it.

3. Do not smoke the day before to avoid intubation affected by coughing during the examination. No smoking can also reduce gastric acid secretion, making it easier for doctors to observe.

4. The patient should cooperate with the doctor. After entering the examination room, he should loosen his collar and belt, take off his dentures and glasses, and lie on his left side. After inserting the mirror, you should not bite it with your teeth to avoid biting the plastic tube of the mirror body. Your body and head should not be turned to avoid damaging the mirror and injuring your internal organs. If there is any discomfort, the patient can endure it for a while. If he can no longer bear it, he can use gestures to signal the operator so that necessary measures can be taken.

5. In order to allow the gastroscope to pass through the pharynx smoothly, pharyngeal anesthetic drugs are generally required before gastroscopy. When using the drugs, the patient must follow the doctor's instructions. The gastroscopy glue currently used in our hospital has the dual functions of anesthetizing the pharynx and removing gastric foam. It is convenient, effective, odorless, and easy for patients to accept.

Therefore, if you have stomach problems, you must not eat or any other food before undergoing a gastroscopy, because eating will affect the results of the examination. Therefore, you must fast on the morning of the examination.
