What causes bad breath and bleeding gums?

Bad breath is very embarrassing, especially when you are in close contact with others, but many people cannot cure it and can only use chewing gum to temporarily remove the odor. If bad breath and bleeding gums occur at the same time, the problem is serious. So how to treat it?

There are many reasons for bad breath, and it is not all due to not brushing teeth for a long time. It is mainly the result of loving cold drinks, the stomach function being trapped by cold evil, and the Yangming dryness and fire being excessive. It is mostly caused by gingivitis, periodontitis or indigestion causing food stagnation in the stomach. Bleeding gums are often caused by periodontitis, gingivitis, etc.

Periodontitis treatment:

1. Targeting local irritants

Supragingival cleaning or subgingival scaling can be performed, and if necessary, the bite can be adjusted, food impaction can be removed, and poor restorations can be corrected.

2. Treatment of periodontal pockets

When the periodontal pocket is overflowing with pus, it can be rinsed with 1% to 3% hydrogen peroxide solution, and a 10% iodine mixture or a drug film such as spiramycin or metronidazole can be placed inside the pocket. After removing local factors, shallow periodontal pockets can be cauterized with iodine phenol solution; deeper periodontal pockets require periodontal surgery to eliminate periodontitis. When the periodontal pocket reaches the root apex and the teeth are obviously loose, extraction may be considered.

3. Loose teeth fixation

If the teeth are still loose, a temporary or permanent periodontal splint can be used to fix the loose teeth.

4. Treatment of periodontal abscess

When the abscess is localized, it can be incised and drained. The periodontal pockets should also be rinsed and coated with medicated film or iodine glycerin.

Gingivitis Treatment:

1. Eliminate the cause: Thoroughly remove plaque and tartar through scaling, and eliminate factors that cause plaque retention and local irritation to the gums. For acute gingival papillitis, local irritants should be removed. For patients with more severe inflammation, local medication can be used in combination with other treatments. Commonly used local medications include 1% hydrogen peroxide, chlorhexidine gargle, and iodine preparations. Acute inflammation can be treated with the antibiotics amoxicillin and metronidazole.

2. Surgical treatment: A small number of patients with hyperplastic gingivitis have obvious gingival fiber hyperplasia, and the gingival shape cannot return to normal after the inflammation subsides. Gingivoplasty can be performed to restore the physiological shape of the gums.

3. Prevent recurrence: The therapeutic effect of chronic gingivitis is ideal, and it is important to prevent the recurrence of the disease. It is necessary to maintain good oral hygiene habits consistently and conduct regular checkups and maintenance (six months to one year) to maintain the therapeutic effect and prevent recurrence.
