What are the symptoms of nonunion

In fact, nonunion is a complication of fracture. The main manifestation is that the fracture cannot heal. As you can imagine, long-term nonunion will have a great impact on our health and life, so we must focus on analyzing the causes and solving them accordingly.

(1) Deformity and muscle atrophy: Ununion fractures may cause angulation, shortening, and rotational deformities. Due to the long-term inability to use the limbs, joint contracture deformities and muscle atrophy may occur.

(2) Abnormal movement of the fracture ends: If abnormal movement is found during the fracture end movement examination more than 6 months after the fracture, it can be diagnosed as nonunion.

(3) Pain: Pain occurs when the bone ends are moved or when trying to bear weight.

(4) Loss of weight-bearing function: Nonunion after diaphyseal fracture causes loss of weight-bearing function, but some femoral neck fractures cause lameness.

(5) Reduced bone conduction sound: In case of nonunion or delayed union, the bone conduction sound is weaker than that on the healthy side. How is nonunion diagnosed? 1. X-rays should pay attention to the degree of osteoporosis at the fracture ends, whether there is bone sclerosis, bone atrophy, medullary cavity closure, and whether there is false joint formation.

Check whether there is abnormal movement of the fracture end and whether there is pain, tenderness and conductive percussion pain. Any fracture in which the two ends of the fracture fail to achieve bony connection 8 months after the fracture is called nonunion. The distinction between fracture healing and nonunion mainly depends on whether the interfragmentary material has been ossified. Some scholars have also proposed that a fracture is considered nonunion if it fails to heal after 6 months.
